Woman gets 12 years for murdering mother

LONDON, ONT. - A London woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday for beating and stabbing her mother to death in a drug-addled rage. Justice Andrew Goodman sentenced Genevieve Reed for the "brutal and prolonged attack" on her mother, Karen, on April 20, 2010. Reed, 34, was high when she repeatedly stabbed her mother, once so deeply in the head the knife tip broke off. She was in a catatonic state in front of her home when she was arrested. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter last fall. Why Reed, who suffers borderline personality disorder, would kill her mother is "mind-boggling", the judge said. "The only person who cared and nurtured Ms Reed throughout her entire life, who was there for her when Ms Reed was in need of someone, is gone," he said. "When Ms Reed eventually leaves jail, Karen Reed will not be waiting for her at the prison gates to provide her with what (she) has come to rely upon most of her life."
