Texas man gets death penalty for killing baby sitter

DALLAS — A Dallas-area man was sentenced to death Saturday for killing his children’s baby sitter to prevent her from testifying that he raped her. Franklin Davis admitted in court to killing 16-year-old Shania Gray, describing how he lured her into his car outside her school, shot her and dumped her body in a river. But he said he killed her out of revenge and hatred, not to obstruct the sexual assault case that was nearing trial. A Dallas jury convicted Davis of capital murder Tuesday before sentencing him to death. Gray was remembered as a vivacious, friendly girl who often played basketball in the family driveway. Most people did not know that she was at the center of the sexual assault case against Davis. Her mother told police in the Dallas suburb of Mesquite that Davis sexually assaulted Gray while she was baby-sitting his children. Davis, known by the nickname “Wish,” exposed himself and had sex with the girl four separate times in 2011, according to a police affidavit.

11 killed, 2 injured in police station attack

Nine people armed with axes and knives were shot dead when they attacked the police station of Selibuya township in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region's Kashgar prefecture, killing two assistant officers, on Saturday. Two other officers were injured, according to a statement by the Xinjiang government's information office released Saturday night. The statement said order was restored following the incident, which began around 5:30 pm. One of the attackers has been identified as Abula Ahat. No civilians were injured in the attack. It was the second attack this year on Selibuya's police station in Bachu county. In April, a terror attack by a 25-member gang in the town left 21 dead, including six attackers and six police officers. The clash was described by the region's information office as a "severe, violent terror incident".

MEXICO CITY - The bodies of seven people were found buried in several hidden graves in a rural area near the Mexican resort city of Acapulco, local media reported on Saturday. An anonymous caller alerted police to bodies buried in the town of El Cayaco near the Pacific coast in Guerrero state, the reports said. The seven bodies, all men, were found in five graves, magazine El Proceso said on its website. The bodies were already decomposed, the newspaper Reforma said. Six other bodies were found on Thursday in hidden graves in El Salto, another small town in the rural area outside of Acapulco, once a fashionable international resort. On Friday, 18 bodies were found buried in several buildings in Michoacan, which borders Guerrero to the north. Almost 80,000 people have died since former President Felipe Calderon launched a campaign against drug cartels in 2006.

Two pilots killed after helicopter crashes into a luxury apartment block in South Korea

A helicopter has plunged to the ground in Seoul in a horrific crash that killed both pilots after its propeller clipped the side of one of the city's most expensive apartment buildings. Chinese woman impaled on spiked railings after falling from building as she cleaned its windows

These pictures show the horrifying moments after a Chinese woman plunged off the side of a woman and became impaled on spiked railings outside. It is not known exactly where the dramatic accident took place but the website LiveLeak.com, where the video was posted, claims the woman was cleaning the windows when she fell. Crowds can be seen gathering around the woman as rescue teams and men dressed in military camouflage attempted to free her.

Eventually they manage to make this cut leaving a foot or so of the railing still sticking out of her head but nevertheless allowing the woman to be taken to the hospital. Slowly and with bloody rags wrapped around her head the woman is carefully escorted away from the building and carried off on a stretcher.

In the hours before his execution - the second in Florida using a new lethal cocktail of drugs - Kimbrough was visited by family and friends. The 40-year-old, who was convicted in 1994 for the brutal attack, requested a final meal of fatty foods, most of which he ate before 9.45am.

His final meal request included two slices of pizza, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, chicken gizzards, chocolate chip ice cream and fruit punch. His mother, a chaplain, three aunts and a cousin were among his final visitors, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Jessica Cary told the Orlando Sentinel. Kimbrough had spent nearly 19 years on death row after being convicted of first-degree murder, sexual battery and burglary. He was convicted of the attack on 28-year-old Miss Collins after DNA from a rape he committed five months later was matched to evidence found in her apartment. Kimbrough was found guilty of climbing into Miss Collins' second-floor apartment and attacking her in the bedroom. Her jaw and skull were broken in the vicious attack and she died in hospital the following day, when life support equipment was turned off.

A bus collision in South Africa killed 29 people and severely injured 20 others late last night on a road notorious for deadly accidents, a government spokesman said. Like many teenagers, Tina Isa didn’t listen to her parents. They lived in different worlds, in effect. Her father, Zein Isa, was a Palestinian Muslim with Old World ideas about how his child should and should not behave. His wife, Maria, a Brazilian Catholic, was more a martinet than a mother. But Tina was a headstrong modern girl growing up in big-city St. Louis, not some medieval village. At age 16, she was a bright senior honors student at rugged Roosevelt High School. She dreamed of studying aeronautics in college. She wanted to learn to fly. She liked hip hop music and giggled with girlfriends about cute boys.

“She was so American,” a schoolmate said. Zein and Maria Isa tried to keep their daughter — the youngest of four — on a short leash. They discouraged her from playing sports and forbid her from going on school trips. Her father decreed that she was destined for an arranged marriage with a good Muslim from his West Bank hometown. She was not allowed to date or take a job. When she managed to steal away to the junior prom, they tracked her down and hauled her home. Six weeks into Tina’s senior year, her parents began the process of withdrawing her from school for disobeying “family rules.” During a conference with the girl’s guidance counselor, Maria Isa described her daughter as a “tramp” and a “whore.”

On Nov. 6, 1989, Tina was late coming home. Her parents were waiting, glaring through the windows, as a classmate — a boy she had secretly begun dating — walked her to the door. Allegedly drunk driver kills three as he speeds through license checkpoint

Troopers say three people have died in a crash in Harnett County after the driver of a pickup truck sped away from a license checkpoint. in Buies Creek, NC. The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the checkpoint was set up on U.S. Highway 421 near Campbell University around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. Troopers say 23-year-old Shane Garner of Coats was driving the truck and didn't stop for the checkpoint. 

Authorities say he turned off U.S. 421, lost control and hit a tree. The truck burst into flames. Authorities say Garner, 20-year-old Austin Ferrell of Buies Creek and 16-year-old Casey Edens of Lillington were killed in the wreck. Two 17-year-old women from Fuquay Varina survived, but are in critical condition. All five were in the cab of the truck. Troopers think Garner had been drinking alcohol. They continue to investigate the crash. According to statistics published by Fathers Against Drunk Driving (FADD), Over 50% of all fatal highway crashes involving two or more cars are alcohol related.

Five killed in Northern Ontario plane crash

Five people were killed Sunday when a Bearskin airline flight crashed near the Red Lake, Ont., airport. KenoraOnline reports that the 19-passenger plane was arriving from Sioux Lookout, Ont., at about 7:30 p.m. when it went down and burst into flames. "One of the passengers sitting in the rear of the plane was able to rescue a female passenger, also at the rear of the aircraft and drag her to safety," OPP Sgt. Rob McDonough told KenoraOnline. "The plane became totally engulfed in flames, and the bush area around the plane caught fire, as well." It's believed the deceased are two pilots and three passengers. Two of the survivors -- and man and a woman -- are in hospital.

A Texas man was sentenced to death for lighting a 76-year-old gas station clerk on fire even after she cooperated during a robbery last year. Bill to toughen penalty for drug, alcohol-related vehicular homicide

TOKYO — The lower house of the Diet has approved a bill to stiffen penalties for fatal accidents caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The bill is expected to be passed by the upper house and be enacted into law during the current Diet session that ends on Dec 6. The revision to the Road Traffic Law follows a series of deadly traffic accidents. Among them was an incident in Tochigi in 2011 in which six children were killed by a crane truck, and another in Kyoto in 2012 in which eight people were killed by a minivan. In both cases, the drivers had concealed their epilepsy when applying for their driving licenses and had seizures at the wheel. Under the new bill, drivers face a maximum prison term of 15 years if they cause an accident while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or due to a medical condition such as epilepsy, Fuji TV reported Wednesday.

A woman running a daycare centre in Iowa has been charged in the death of a 3-year-old girl who she ‘threw to the ground’ because she refused to take off her coat. The child was injured in the home of Rochelle Lynn Sapp, 33, who runs a daycare centre at her home in 706 10th Street SE, in eastern Orange City, according to police. Court documents say Sapp called the girl’s mother shortly after 9am and told her Autumn had fallen down the stairs. An attorney for Lambert denied his client killed himself intentionally.

16-year-old girl shoots up school, tells reporter 'I Don't Like Mondays'

Monday mornings are tough for everyone, but on Jan. 29, 1979, a freckle-faced red headed teen found a unique way to sing the beginning-of-the-week blues. The first note of her displeasure — a rifle crack — came at around 8:30 a.m., just as a bell rang to signal the start of classes at Grover Cleveland Elementary in San Carlos, Calif., a suburb of San Diego. Children waiting in front of the school started to fall to the ground, bleeding. The sounds of gunfire continued. It took a few shots before the pupils, parents, and teachers realized what was happening.

A sniper, somewhere in the row of houses across the street from the school, was using kids for target practice. With children screaming and bullets flying, Cleveland elementary’s principal, Burton Wragg, 53, ran outside to help the victims and move the other children, who were paralyzed with fear, out of harm's way. There was another pop and Wragg fell, shot in the chest. Mike Suchar, 56, the school custodian, rushed out to help the dying principal and was also shot. Teachers and students barricaded themselves in the school, while nurses treated the wounded. Four victims, however, were still outside. San Diego police officer Robert Robb, first to arrive at the scene, got a bullet in his neck.

The shooting continued until another officer, aided by a security guard from a neighboring high school, commandeered a garbage truck and drove it in front of Cleveland Elementary, blocking the sniper’s sightlines. When it was over, eight children and the police officer were wounded. The custodian and the principal were dead. On a hunch, a reporter from a local paper dialed the phone number at the address police had pinpointed as the sniper’s nest. A young girl answered. The reporter asked if she knew where the shots were coming from. She rattled off the address of her house. When the reporter pointed out that it was her own address, she said, “Yeah, who do you think’s doing the shooting?” The next question, the obvious one, was why? “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day,” she told him.

Wife dies falling into husband’s tomb

An elderly Italian wife has died as she was cleaning her husband's grave. Antonietta Testa, 75, was cleaning the tomb when the marble broke, causing her to fall to the bottom of the grave, a drop of 12 feet. The retiree managed to initially survive the fall, RaiNews 24 reported. Emergency services rushed to the cemetery and were able to lift the woman from her husband's grave on a stretcher. She was rushed to hospital suffering from a broken thigh bone. However, when Mrs. Testa got to the hospital she went into a state of shock and suffered a heart attack. She died in the hospital.

Georgia couple charged with murder after girl's body found in trash

The father and stepmother of a 10-year-old girl were charged with murder after the burned body of the girl was found in a trash can outside an apartment complex near Atlanta, police said. Eman Moss and Tiffany Moss were charged with felony murder, cruelty to a child and concealing a body, according to a statement issued by the Gwinnett County Police Department. Police identified the victim as 10-year-old Emani Moss. Eman Moss called 911 early on Saturday morning to say he was suicidal and that there was a dead body with him, police said. Moss said his daughter drank some kind of chemical and died, according to police. When officers arrived, Moss was standing in the breezeway of one of the apartments, located in Lawrenceville on the outskirts of Atlanta. A man who had his testicles bitten off by his pet dog on Monday has since died of his injuries, Italian media reported. The 30-year-old man was rushed to hospital on Monday evening, after his girlfriend became worried that she had not heard from him. A 65-year-old man allegedly shot dead two elderly women with an assault rifle at his nursing home on Sunday in the belief they convinced his ex-girlfriend to dump him. Fox 2 News reported Mike Reda grabbed an AK-47 from his room at Detroit's Pablo Davis Elder Living Center after having a fight with his girlfriend earlier in the day. Reda allegedly hunted down two of his former flame's friends in the center before shooting them dead about 5.45pm. Police said he shot a 54-year-old woman once as she sat outside the apartment building. She died in hospital. The gunman then allegedly shot a 65-year-old woman multiple times inside her apartment. She died at the scene.
