Five-year-old tells cops how her father shot dead mother as she slept alongside her as he is discovered on the run in El Salvador

A man on the run since 2010 after being accused of gunning down his wife was arrested Tuesday by authorities in El Salvador and will be returned to the U.S. to face charges, authorities have announced. Juan Castillo, 33, is the primary suspect in the February 2010 shooting death of wife Monica Leija, 36, in their Texas home and had fled to his native country to escape prosecution, said officials. The couple’s now-10-year-old daughter Cassandra Castillo shared the horrifying details of her mother’s murder with officials, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The couple reportedly argued in the kitchen in the hours before Leija’s slaying. Both of their young children were sent upstairs, and their mother eventually joined them before their slumber turned into a nightmare, said Cassandra Castillo. The girl claims her father came into the bedroom, leaned down and whispered something into her mother’s ear before fatally shooting her and fleeing. He had been hunted by U.S. officials in the years since, but no major breaks in the case happened until this week. This is the first-known time police in the Central American country have cooperated to arrest a fugitive hiding in their country, officials said, according to My Fox Houston.
