Five people have been charged with intentional injury to a Chinese teenager who was so desperate to buy an iPad and iPhone that he sold his kidney for just over £2,000.

The accused, from southern China, include a surgeon who removed a kidney from a 17-year-old boy in return for around 220,000 yuan - just over £20,000. Prosecutors in Chenzhou city, Hunan province, said one of the defendants received the money to arrange the transplant.

He paid the teenager, identified only as Wang, 22,000 yuan - just over £2,000 - and split the rest with the surgeon, the three other defendants and other medical staff.

An eight-year-old boy was killed yesterday after being run over by a 4x4 towing a trailer at his family's farm.

Charles Kimm was playing in the grounds of the farm, Wyndales Lodge in Symington, south Lanarkshire, when he was struck by the vehicle as it reversed through a gate.

SHREWSBURY, Mass.—A Shrewsbury man has been charged with murder for what authorities are calling the "gruesome" slaying of his wife.

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said the body of Yuee Zhou (yee zhoo) was found by her son. She was pronounced dead shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Two teens held after nine-year-old shot dead

Police in southern France on Wednesday detained two teenagers after a nine year-old boy was shot dead, prosecutor Samuel Finielz told AFP.

The fatal shooting in the southern town of Mende appears to have been an accident, though ballistic tests and an autopsy must still be carried out, the prosecutor said.

These tests, according to Finielz, would among other things show whether the bullet had ricocheted off a wall before killing the child, rather than hitting him directly.

Amsterdam is one of Europe's murder capitals, says Eurostat

Amsterdam is in fourth place in the 2007-2009 murder rate league table put together by European statistics agency Eurostat, news agency ANP reported on Thursday.

During those three years, there were 3.65 murders per 100,000 people living in the Dutch capital, Eurostat said. Only Vilnius in Lithuania (7.9), Tallin in Estonia (6) and Luxemburg (4.24) had higher rates than Amsterdam, the news agency quoted Eurostat as saying.

Brussels was fifth with a murder rate of 3.09. According to police figures, there were 19 murders in Amsterdam in 2008 and 31 in 2009 - five of which were related to Albanian gang violence.

However, in 2010 and 2011 there were just 16 murders in the capital, making it likely Amsterdam has gone back down the league table.

Inmate who killed, sodomized mother dies on death row

Frank Manuel Abilez, who was sentenced to death for the 1996 murder and sodomy of his 68-year-old mother in Los Angeles County, was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday morning, said Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Lt. Sam Robinson.

Abilez lived in the cell alone, Robinson said, and was pronounced dead of natural causes at 10:49 a.m.

Abilez is the 57th death row inmate to die of natural causes since capital punishment was reinstated in California in 1978. Thirteen people have been executed, another 19 have committed suicide and six have died from other causes. There are currently 724 people on death row in the state.

(CBS/AP) OAKLAND, Calif. - A gunman opened fire at a Christian university in California Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding as many as 3 more, authorities said.

Police say they have a suspect in custody. Police have identified the suspect as a 43-year-old Oakland man named One L. Goh, who is in custody after surrendering at a shopping center about an hour after the shooting at Oikos University on Monday morning.

Man held for setting his wife on fire

A man in Malmö in southern Sweden is suspected of having set his wife on fire following a domestic dispute stemming from her request for a divorce.

The 38-year-old woman received serious burns in the incident, but her injuries are reportedly not life threatening.

"She has injuries from her midsection and upward and on the entire front of her body...both her her torso and arms. But her face is in pretty good shape," police spokesperson Peter Martin told the local Skånska Dagbladet newspaper.

According to Martin, investigators believe the woman was drenched in a flammable liquid which was then ignited by her 53-year-old husband.

"The woman wanted a divorce but the man didn't. He was said to be very controlling," police spokesperson Anders Lindell told the Expressen newspaper.

The incident began when the officer responded to a report that a man had brandished a knife at his neighbor on the 3200 block of Fiji Lane on Bay Farm Island about 5:45 p.m., police said.

The officer contacted the suspect in the road near his open garage door and detained him without incident. But a woman then came out of the suspect's home to ask what was going on, authorities said.

A pit bull described as being 1 1/2 years old followed the woman outside and began charging at the officer, police said.

A convicted murderer who has been out of prison for four years killed three former buddies in a brutal shooting that left one victim riddled with 33 bullet wounds, prosecutors say.
