The incident began when the officer responded to a report that a man had brandished a knife at his neighbor on the 3200 block of Fiji Lane on Bay Farm Island about 5:45 p.m., police said.
The officer contacted the suspect in the road near his open garage door and detained him without incident. But a woman then came out of the suspect's home to ask what was going on, authorities said.
A pit bull described as being 1 1/2 years old followed the woman outside and began charging at the officer, police said.
The suspect yelled at the woman to control the dog, and she grabbed the animal briefly before it broke free and continued charging at the officer, police said. While still holding onto the suspect, the officer shot and killed the pit bull, police said.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
