A toddler on the New South Wales north coast is recovering from a terrifying ordeal after being attacked by a python. The two-year-old was squeezed and bitten by the 185-centimetre non-venomous carpet snake in her Lismore home over the weekend. The girl had been sleeping at about 3:00am on Saturday when her mother woke to find the snake in their bed. A local snake handler Tex Tillis says the girl's mother reacted quickly. "Mum woke up in panic and actually struck out to try and grab the snake's head, which of course is what she had to do," he said. JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Angolan media say 10 people, including four children, have died in a stampede during a religious gathering at a sports stadium in Luanda, the Angolan capital. Angop, the Angolan news agency, cited officials as saying Tuesday that 120 people were also injured. The incident happened on New Year's Eve when tens of thousands of people gathered at the stadium and panic ensued. Faustino Sebastiao, spokesman for the national firefighters department, says those who died were crushed and asphyxiated. The event in the southern African nation was organized by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, an evangelical group founded in Brazil.

Taliban massacre five women teachers travelling to primary school in protest at female education in Pakistan

Five female teachers in Pakistan have been slaughtered by Islamic militants bent on keeping women and girls away from education. They were murdered in a New Year's Day ambush on the van carrying them home from their jobs at a community centre and primary school in the north-west of the country. The teachers and two health workers - one man and one woman - were killed this afternoon in the conservative Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.

To his congregation, he was an inspirational Christian pastor who had dedicated his life to raising money for the poor, homeless and sick. Isaac William, 61, his wife Venus, 54, and their three daughters appeared to be the very model of Christian charity, funding housing, hospitals and education in Pakistan. But in reality, the preacher was swindling taxpayers out of £2.6million in a tax fraud to pay for a million-pound property empire in Britain and abroad. The 'crooked' businessman who ran a security guard company, made profits of over £6million exploiting illegal immigrants who were forced to work around the clock on a pittance and live in cramped caravans and huts sleeping on the floor.

To avoid paying VAT, income tax and national insurance, William hid the profits into a number of bank accounts including his charity account named 'The Great Commission Evangelical Fellowship'. But the money was then withdrawn in cash and laundered by his wife and daughters, Sylvia, 34, who worked for Lloyds Bank, Maria Gunasekara, 33, a business manager for Barclays and their younger sister Sophie, 26, a law graduate. The family used the cash to build an impressive property portfolio which included eight homes in London, Surrey, Hounslow and Walsall and two holiday homes in Pakistan. The father of six also splashed out on luxury sports cars and frequent trips to Dubai and Pakistan. But the authorities became suspicious when a van belonging to William was stopped by police who found a gang of illegal foreign workers.

Seven Pakistan aid workers - including six women - executed by Taliban for 'distributing polio vaccine'

Six female aid workers and a male doctor were shot dead by gunmen in Pakistan yesterday in an attack believe to be linked to the recent murders of polio vaccination workers. A child travelling in the vehicle was removed from the vehicle by the gunmen and replaced once the adults had been executed. District police officer Abdur Rashid Khan said their vehicle was targeted as they returned home from work at a children's community centre run by Pakistani charity Ujala, or Light.

At least 61 people were crushed to death in a stampede at a New Year's Eve fireworks display in Ivory Coast's main city of Abidjan, authorities said today. The incident happened outside the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium at about 2am in the Plateau district of the city. The dead included 26 children, 28 women and six men, according to Minister of Youth Alain Lobognon after visiting the hospital morgue.

Pastor's wife, 65, and mother-of-two buys pistol from gun store before walking out and shooting herself dead in parking lot

A pastor's wife bought a pistol from a gun shop before shooting herself dead in her Lexus sedan in the store's parking lot, police have said. Harriet Deison, 65, was found dead in her car near the McClelland Gun Shop in East Dallas, Texas at 2.15pm on Saturday after witnesses heard two shots and smoke coming out of the vehicle. Police believe Deison, a married mother of two and grandmother to five, shot herself with the pistol she had just purchased from the shop. The death has been ruled a suicide. Police found no suicide note at the scene and have not provided detail into what led to her death.

Serial tree killer on the loose in 5 prefectures

TOKYO — Scattered across the landscape of Japan are Shinto shrines of various shapes and sizes. In many of the larger shrines you’ll find one or more especially old trees known as “goshinboku,” which means “sacred tree.” Sacred trees are usually massive in size and centuries old with some reportedly over 1,000 years old. You can usually tell them from the “shimenawa” wrapped around their trunks. A shimenawa is an extremely thick rope which encloses something holy and wards off evil from outside. These age-old trees are beautiful specimens of nature’s strength and longevity and add an extra level of serenity to their shrines. However, in the past month, someone or some group has been killing off these sacred trees of shrines in five separate prefectures in Japan.
