It may have the country’s largest private property portfolio but despite owning thousands of houses, the Catholic Church does not have to pay a cent in household charges.
The Church, which at one point owned or occupied at least 10,700 houses, schools, halls, churches and shops around the country, has an exemption from all property taxes because it is a charity.
With 1,368 parishes in Ireland – many containing several parochial homes and other properties – the Church may be getting off the hook for up to €500,000 a year in Environment Minister Phil Hogan’s new tax, despite its massive wealth and land interests.
The charge may be just €100 a year at current rates but the Government is expected to introduce much higher fees, which could rise to €1,000 for certain properties.
Archbishops and other senior church figures sleeping in their luxurious palaces can rest easy however, as their homes will not be subject to the charge.

A 10 year-old boy was forced to live in a coal bunker for more than a year, by his own mother.
The youngster slept in the padlocked outhouse every night and was imprisoned for hours at a time during the day if he misbehaved.
While the boy's mother, in her 30s, and her partner, in his 40s, lived in comfort in the main house the boy's room contained a soiled mattress, a dirty sleeping bag and a urine-filled potty.

A 9-month-old Pasadena baby died last week after a television weighing more than 60 pounds fell on him, police said.

Thug beat lover's five-year-old son to death 'in jealous rage'
A five-year-old boy was killed by his stepfather because he was jealous of the attention he received from his mother, a court has heard.
Tyler Whelan died in March last year after collapsing at his home in Sheepwalk, Paston, near Peterborough.

OTTAWA - Cops confirmed Friday they found more human remains in the search for victims of accused serial killer Camille Cleroux.
The news comes as police continued their search of a forested area in the city's south end. Police began searching the forested section of Fairlea Woods along Albion Rd. on Thursday.
A source told QMI Agency police are searching for at least two more bodies. Cleroux, 58, is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of two of his wives and a neighbour over the course of two decades.
He lived in the area now being searched for several years and the remains of two of his alleged victims were both recovered in the neighbourhood.

Addiction guru guilty of sexual abuse, jailed for five years
Addiction guru Keith Bakker has been jailed for five years for sexually abusing a number of clients by a court in Amsterdam. The guilty verdicts included three counts of rape, including one of a 15-year-old girl, website nu.nl said.
Bakker, a former addict, set up a successful anti-addiction clinic but his empire collapsed after complaints of sexual abuse began to surface at the end of 2010.

Yuko Emoto, 35, was arrested in February for abandoning a corpse after the partial remains of her her 2-year-old daughter, Kotone, were found in the woods near her house in Hijimachi, Oita Prefecture, last September.
The case received a lot of publicity when Emoto claimed that Kotone had been abducted from a parked car outside a supermarket. Emoto told police she had left her daughter in the child seat in back of her car while she went into the Marushoku Kawasaki supermarket. She said she had been gone about five minutes, and when she returned to the car, her daughter was missing.
Police launched a massive search for the girl, but to no avail.
Emoto was arrested after she confessed that the abduction story had been a lie and that she had actually buried the girl’s body in the mountains.

Liberty and his friend were talking to a man in the 3500 block of West Douglas Boulevard shortly before noon, police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez said.
Liberty’s friend and the man began arguing and the man brandished a knife, Perez said. Liberty fell to the ground while he and his friend began running from the man.
The man stabbed Liberty multiple times while his friend fled the scene, Perez said. Liberty’s friend returned to the scene and found Liberty, who was then placed in a car and taken to at Mount Sinai Hospital.

A 73 year old female bus monitor, Lucille Buke, approached the oldest boy and told him to stop. According to police, the boy started cursing at the woman and calling her names.
As the bus monitor verbally admonished him, the other boy began spewing insults at the woman.
The boys also kept throwing the lanyard, forcing the driver, Shaunda Gilbert, to stop the bus on Springville Rd. Police said the youngest boy threatened to get off the bus and headed toward the door, but the driver blocked his way.
The boy shoved her to the floor and violently pulled on her hair while slamming her head against the floor, police said. After letting go of her hair, police said the boy punched the 35-year-old bus driver in the chest and other areas of her upper body.
The oldest boy then stepped in and punched the driver in the head and face several times, police said.
Another bus monitor, 19-year-old Patrick Morris, was also punched in the thigh when he tried to help calm down the boys, police said.

Father gets 17 years for killing daughter with axe
The 53-year-old Pakistani man who killed his 16-year-old daughter, Swera, at their home in Zurich-Höngg in 2010 has been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment.
The Zurich District Court found the father guilty of murder, and concluded that although it had not been an honour killing in the sense most commonly understood, the man had killed his daughter “to get out of a humiliating situation and to restore his honour”.
The court stated that the father, referred to as Scheragha R, had used “really excessive violence” and that he had killed his teenaged daughter with “reckless brutality”, newspaper Tages Anzieger reported.
The court listened as the defence lawyer, Matthias Brunner, described a man who had reached the end of his tether, both physically and emotionally, having been particularly burdened by his two younger daughters’ psychological, behavioural and developmental problems.
The discovery that his favourite eldest daughter wanted to move out of the home finally destroyed the family ideal he had held and sent him over the edge, Brunner said.

DENVER -- A Greeley teen has been charged in the death of a 2-year-old after police said he punched the child in the chest in a scuffle over a cell phone.
According to the arrest affidavit, Jesus Cornelio, 17, was babysitting his nephew, Jose Angel Cornelio-Espinosa, on March 22.
Cornelio was sitting on the couch looking at Facebook on his cellphone when Jose kept “trying to take his phone away, which aggravated Cornelio,” the affidavit said.
Cornelio then punched the child in the chest, causing him to fall backwards and hit the back of his head, the affidavit said.

A teenager died from heart failure after taking steroids he had ordered from a website, an inquest heard.
Mohammed Belkhair, 19, suffered a deadly reaction to the performance-enhancing drugs which he took secretly.
Mr Belkhair, from Beamish Close, Longsight, Manchester, was rushed to hospital after his sister found him vomiting and ‘blue’ in his bedroom on May 20 last year.
The teenager’s body temperature shot up and he died from heart failure at Manchester Royal Infirmary later that day.

Boy, 9, goes to school and tells teachers his mother and sister are dead...then leads police to blood-splattered father
A nine-year-old boy arrived at school on Monday morning and told teachers that his mother and older sister had been killed at their home less than a mile away.
The boy then led police officers to his home where they found the bodies of a woman and a girl, as well as a man - believed to be his father - covered in blood and an unharmed four-year-old boy.
Authorities believe the boy was in a state of shock when he arrived at Mabel Hoggard Elementary School near Washington Avenue in Las Vegas shortly before 9 a.m.

A US tattoo artist who chopped up another tattooist with an axe could be locked up for life as a German court heard on Monday that he killed with "particular savagery."
The 30-year-old New Yorker identified only as James B., had only been living in Berlin for about six months when he got into a drunken argument with an Austrian tattooist.
“He first hit the man straight in the face with an axe, damaging his skull and cutting through his nose and mouth,” Tobias Kaehne, spokesman for the Berlin District Court, told The Local.
“Because he killed him with particular savagery, the usual sentencing limit of 15 years for murder could be extended to life.”
Forensic detectives found at least 52 injuries on the Austrian Raoul Schmidhuber’s body, after it had been recovered in pieces from the Spree River and the Schäfer Lake in and around the German capital.
The cause of death was drowning - in his own blood.

The texts were written by Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes, who is thought to have shot his family in the south of France in April 2011 and is still on the run.
"I think I’ve got a superiority complex, you could call it that. But it’s based on a simple observation: I belong to a group of people who are intelligent, determined, balanced and in good moral and physical health," writes Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes, French daily Le Parisien reports.

A 2-year-old boy found his parents dead in their Queens home after a macabre murder-suicide, police sources and neighbors said.

The 87-year-old confronted a group of teenagers who were jumping in bushes at the front of his Waikanae Beach property on the weekend.
He asked them to move along, but one of the youths verbally abused then struck him, pushing him off-balance.
Detective Mike Stone said the man had been shoved into the ground hitting his face on the road. "He fractured his cheekbone, had deep lacerations to his forehead and extensive bruising to his face and arms,'' said Mr Stone.
He was taken to hospital overnight after he was found lying on the road bleeding by a neighbour.
"The attack was horrendous and cowardly on a frail and brittle old man,'' he said.

Woman stabbed at front door of home in Hyogo
The woman was quoted by police as saying that she returned home at about 1:50 p.m. and as she opened the front door, a man suddenly lunged at her with a knife, NTV reported. She suffered wounds to her stomach and back. The assailant fled immediately and she dialed 119 for help.

Third mother dies at scandal-hit maternity unit where five babies have also died
A third mother has died at a scandal-hit hospital maternity unit which is being investigated by detectives. Five babies have also apparently died as a result of alleged poor care at Furness General Hospital in Barrow.
Health chiefs are now investigating the death of 26-year-old Carly Scott who passed away last Wednesday.
She had been discharged after having her baby a week previously.
