A majority of senators in the upper house of parliament voted on Tuesday not to ban the ritual slaughter of animals. The draft legislation was introduced by the pro-animal PvdD in the lower house in June 2011 and passed by a large majority of MPs. It first went to the senate last December but was voted out.

At the time, party leader Marianne Thieme blamed the failure to get it through the senate on 'an enormous lobby' by religious groups. She vowed to start working on a new law. It is this new legislation which has now lost the vote for a second time in the senate. Most of the major parties voted against, saying it went against the law on religious freedom.

Man gets 120 years for raping woman, forcing her to assault infant

An Oak Forest man who sexually assaulted a Wheaton woman after breaking into her apartment, then forced her to sexually abuse her 5-month-old daughter, was sentenced Monday to 120 years in prison.

“Forcing a mother to do that is an act the devil himself would be loathe to commit,” DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin said as he hammered James P. Murphy with the maximum prison term allowed.

Teen left gardener to die, murder trial told

Prosecutor Jim Pearce told the jury the young man, 18, and two other young men bashed Tuyet Van Do, 59, to death outside his caravan at a Waterloo Corner market garden in northern Adelaide in November 2010.

"They probably went there to break into some of the sheds on the property. Whatever the reason for their visit, they were no doubt disturbed by Mr Do," Mr Pearce said.

"In the confrontation that followed, Mr Do was beaten to death. "He was beaten with a length of wood, he was beaten with a shovel, he was punched and he was kicked, he was probably stomped on by one of his attackers - stomped on as he lay on the ground immobilised by the attack that had been rained upon him.

"Once they had finished the attackers left him for dead. They left him lying on the dirt. "There, Mr Do slowly died as a result of head injuries he sustained in this attack. Mr Do did not die immediately, it is likely he survived for one to two hours after the attack."

Nigeria religious riots kill at least 52

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) - At least 52 people were killed in religious rioting sparked by three suicide bombings against churches in northern Nigeria, where the dead were on Monday piled up in mortuaries and cemeteries in the city of Kaduna.

A Reuters reporter visited two hospitals in Kaduna, where the rioting broke out on Sunday after suicide car bombers attacked three churches in northern Nigeria, killing at least 19 people and wounding dozens.

Christian youths had set up roadblocks and dragged Muslims from cars or motorbikes and killed them, witnesses said.

Teenager arrested for raping 83-year-old

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested following the violent assault and rape of an 83-year-old woman in the centre of Marseilles. The boy, who denies the charges, was arrested on Friday morning near his parents’ house in the city centre.

The attack is alleged to have taken place on June 3rd. The boy is suspected of following the woman and attacking her when she reached her home at one o’clock in the morning, taking her jewellery and then raping her before fleeing the scene.

Man shoots dead two female gendarmes in small French village

The gendarmes, aged 29 and 35, were intervening in a dispute on Sunday when a man who had been accused of burglary knocked down one of them, grabbed her gun and killed her, investigators said.

He then pursued the second officer and shot her in cold blood in a nearby square. The suspect, who an investigator said appeared to be drunk, made off with the gendarmes' revolvers.

Three people died on Sunday when a glider that was released after being towed by a single-engine plane crashed outside Wallis, authorities said.

When the glider was released at about 5 p.m., it “took a nose dive and crashed into the ground,” according to a statement from the state Department of Public Safety.

Fred Blair, 68, of Wallis, and Matilda Blair, 32, and 3-year-old Andrew Blair of Houston died instantly. The crash occurred near the glider facility at Texas 36 and Cougar Drive, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said.

Rodney King found dead in swimming pool

Rodney King, whose videotaped beating by police in 1991 sparked the L.A. riots, was found dead at his California home on Sunday. He was 47.

Police said King's fiancée discovered him at the bottom of the swimming pool at their Rialto, Calif., home, about 55 miles east of Los Angeles. Police responded to a call at 5:25 a.m., pulled King out of the pool and attempted CPR, but could not revive him.

24-year-old killed when joy-ride turns into multiple-car smashup on busy street in Queens

A Sanitation Department worker was thrown from his speeding car and killed after it smashed into several other vehicles while careening down a busy Queens street early Saturday, police said.

Twenty-four-year-old Dominick Bunch — who police suspect had been drinking — was ejected through his Toyota Camry’s windshield and skidded lifelessly on Atlantic Ave. in Woodhaven just before 3 a.m.

A Pennsylvania mother of two is accused of getting her teenage daughter hooked on heroin and injecting her with the drug hundreds of times when she was too weak to do it herself.

Authorities say that Brandi Baumgardner, 38, of Beaver Springs, began smoking marijuana with her daughter when the girl was 12 years old, The Daily Item reports.

A 24-year-old woman was killed in an accidental shooting when her brother dropped the gun he was carrying in south Houston on Saturday evening, authorities said. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. at a home in the 4600 block of Kingsbury.

Slovakia off-duty policeman kills three

Two Canadian sisters have been found dead in their hotel room in Thailand. Thai police suspect Audrey and Noemi Belanger, aged 20 and 26 from near Quebec, may have been poisoned.

The sisters' bodies were discovered by maids at the Phi Phi Palm Residence Hotel on the popular tourist resort island of Phi Phi on Friday.

Officials said the sisters were covered in vomit, had skin lesions and had been bleeding from the gums, according to the Phuket Gazette. They also said both women's fingernails and toenails were blue.

The father of a three-month old girl fed a mixture of vodka and baby formula has been charged with murder in a crime he says was an accident.

One year after Keith Furlow's daughter died after consuming the mixture at his home just east of Atlanta, Georgia, he was indicted on felony murder and second-degree cruelty to children.

Court documents filed Thursday reveal the baby had a blood-alcohol level of .1119 after drinking the mixture from a baby bottle on June 8 of 2011.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested over claims at least 26 school pupils were stabbed with a medical needle during a lunch break.

A 30-year-old pregnant woman, and a 54-year-old man, both employees of France Télécom, have killed themselves in the past two weeks.

Between 2008 and 2009, 35 France Télécom employees killed themselves, and the latest suicides bring the total this year up to four.

The man, who worked at the Noisy site, west of Paris, was apparently going through a divorce. The woman worked in Arcueil, south of Paris. Neither left a suicide note.

Man arrested over death of 4-month-old son in Miyazaki

MIYAZAKI — Police said Thursday they have arrested a 32-year-old man in Ebino, Miyazaki Prefecture, for manslaughter over the death of his 4-month-old son.

According to police, the man, who has been named as Yukihiro Kakinoki, gave himself up to police after assaulting his second son at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, TBS reported. The infant, Hinata Kakinoki, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

During police questioning, Kakinoki reportedly told investigators that he had become angry that his son was crying in the middle of the night and repeatedly punched him in the stomach.

A martial arts expert who ran several training schools hanged himself as police were on the verge of bringing sexual molestation charges against him.

Teacher tells students to cut and burn themselves to rid their bodies of demons in bizarre ritual

A Florida teacher was arrested on child abuse charges after allegedly encouraging her students to cut and burn themselves in order to rid their bodies of evil spirits.

Danielle Harkins, 35, allegedly brought seven teens to a spot by the pier in St. Petersburg on Saturday, and began the strange religious ritual by starting a small fire, police told WTSP News.

The teacher then told the teens to cut themselves to cast out demons lurking in their bodies, and cauterize the wounds to prevent the spirits from returning, investigators said.

"There was apparently some chanting and then dancing around this fire that was taking place," St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman Mike Puetz told Fox Tampa Bay.

Two kids were cut, and one sustained second-degree burns after the teacher allegedly poured perfume on his wound and lit it with a cigarette lighter, investigators told WTSP.

One of them was cut in the neck with a broken bottle and the wound was cauterized with a heated-up house key, authorities told Bay News 9.

Police said Martinez's crime spree happened on the night of Oct. 11, 2009.

The victim recently told KRDO-TV that she'd gone out for her birthday that night, celebrating at a bar and a house party. All the while, she was being stalked by Martinez, the news station reported.

The victim told police that Martinez abducted her in her sister's car and beat her. "My head was being bashed into the console, my hair was ripped out, I lost the majority of my teeth," the woman told KRDO-TV.

Police said her attacker drove the woman to several locations west of Colorado Springs, where he repeatedly sexually assaulted her.

The woman told police she tried to fight the man during the attack and that she lost consciousness at one point. The man eventually stopped the car, leaving the woman inside as he ran off.

The beating left the woman with serious brain injuries.

She says he was with family members when he passed away on Tuesday. No specific cause was given, but Caserta tells CBS News that years of heavy smoking combined with complications from a recent heart attack led to his death.

A 26-year-old man from Helsingborg, in southern Sweden, has been sentenced to prison after severely whipping his wife with electrical cables when she chose to nurse their daughter instead of preparing him a snack.

3-year old Savagely Beaten for Wetting Pants, Dies While Mom Eats Pizza

ORLANDO, FLA -- An Orange County judge denied bail for a woman who deputies say participated in the abuse of her young son and ate pizza as he lay dying. Robin Greinke, 26, and her boyfriend, Steven Neil, 33, were arrested Thursday.

They also conspired to tell investigators that the boy had experienced a seizure and could have died from meningitis or that his injuries had come from a fall. The two later admitted to deputies that they had been punishing the boy because he wet his pants.

A deadly gun and arson attack a funeral service in Ciudad Juárez had led to the death of the deceased man's wife and injured eight children - including a baby.

According to local media, the incident at a chapel in Mexico's notorious 'Murder City' began when the assailants burst into the San Martin Funeral Home firing weapons, killing the widow with a gunshot to the head and then covered her and the injured in petrol.

The gang then set the woman alight along with other victims of the shooting causing first and second degree burns to five minors in what is being described as a targeted strike.

Teen, 17, drinking with father accidentally kills himself when bullet ricochets

A Texas teenager shot and killed himself while he was playing with a loaded gun.

Police in Little Mexico, an area south of Alamo, say that Israel Torres was drinking heavily with his father before the accident on Monday night.

Mr Torres said that the teen pointed the loaded weapon at a butane tank and fired, causing the bullet to ricochet backwards and straight towards his head.

Alligator bites off airboat captain's hand in front of horrified tourists after he taunted it with marshmallows (but his hand was then retrieved from dead alligator's stomach)

An airboat captain from Everglades City, Florida, had his hand ripped off by an alligator while he was allegedly feeding the animal on Tuesday.

Witnesses said the victim, an employee of Captain Doug’s Everglades Tours known as Captain Wally, was seen feeding an alligator marshmallows minutes before the animal bit off his hand.

Incredibly, the severed limb was later retrieved from the reptile's stomach when officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) tracked down and killed the gator.

Two shallow quakes less than half an hour apart shook the mountainous Hindu Kush region Monday, starting a slide of earth and rock that smashed into a remote village, burying mudbrick houses to a depth of up to 100 metres (300 feet).

Motorcyclist killed by 5-storey plunge

A novice motorcyclist died in Houston, Texas, Friday after his bike hit a wall on the fifth floor of a parking garage and he was thrown off the structure. A friend was teaching the man how to ride a motorcycle when he hit the accelerator by mistake, police say.

The 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

British parachutist left dangling from cliff phoned girlfriend to say 'don't worry' then fell to his death

Jake Simkins, 41, spoke to his partner, who is seven months pregnant, and sent her text messages as he spent three hours suspended from the cliff on the Greek island of Zante on Friday.

He told her to stay calm and even joked that she should go sunbathing before the rocks gave way and he plunged to the beach below.

Mr Simkins, from north London, had jumped from the top of the cliff at Navagio beach but after he opened his parachute he was blown back towards the rocks and his canopy became snagged.

School bus fire kills 4 children in C China

ZHENGZHOU - An overloaded kindergarten school bus caught fire on Monday in Puyang City in central China's Henan Province, killing 4 children, local authorities said Tuesday.

A total of 13 children were on the eight-seat minibus when the accident happened in Zhangyi Village in Puyang. Another child and the driver were severely injured. Two children suffered minor injuries, an official with the Puyang city government said.
