A nine-member family from Zhenxiong county collected poisonous mushrooms from a nearby mountain on September 28, according to doctors at the People's Hospital in Guizhou Province (PHGP), where the three surviving family members are being treated.

A former Gurkha soldier fought off a mugger in spite of having a 6in knife blade jammed into his arm – then managed to grab hold of his attacker for 15 minutes while he waited for the police to arrive. Shop owner Taitex Phlamachha had just been to a cashpoint with his wife when he was pushed up against a wall and told to ‘hand over the money’ or get stabbed. Mr Phlamachha, 38, from Maidstone, Kent, a Gurkha with Maidstone's 36 Engineers for 13 years, said: ‘I tried to warn him, “Don’t mess with Gurkhas. We’re trained to fight.” But he didn’t listen.’

Niger: Floods kill 91 people, says official

A top official in Niger said the country's recent floods have killed 91 people and caused significant damage. The director of the cabinet, Aghaly Abdoulkader, said all eight regions of the country are affected by the floods, including the large regions of Tillabery, Dosso and Niamey. The floods have damaged fields, rice paddies, water points, schools, health centers, roads, bridges and dams, he said. In addition large quantities of food have been destroyed and many cattle have washed away.

Man, 71, 'raped two old women'

The 71-year-old was taken in for questioning on Sunday afternoon, after a 78-year-old woman reported him to police. He reportedly broke into her house and raped her. His face was concealed but the women recognised him and went to the police straight away. While in custody, police also charged him with the rape of an 80-year-old woman which took place in Rennes on August 1. “The modus operandi was the same: he broke into the house in order to find cash, then sexually assaulted the victim and then left,” said a source at the police station. According to local paper Ouest France, the man had already spent 20 years in prison for sexual abuse in the 1960s.

Pizza delivery man killed for being 40 minutes late

Andrés Díaz Rivera body, eyes blindfolded and hands bound, was found on Monday in the town of Tetla, some 90 miles east of Mexico City, according to the public prosecutor's office in Tlaxcala state. The 25-year-old delivery man, had last been seen Saturday evening as he left to drop off a late order. José Luís Lima Moran, the 22-year-old client, who hit the police officer who discovered the delivery man's moped, admitted that he beat and locked up his victim for five hours with the help of his girlfriend. It was when the delivery man tried to escape from the ordeal, that the client allegedly stabbed him multiple times before dumping the body in an empty area next door.

Boy, 6, and mother died in murder-suicide

CALGARY — Police say a six-year-old boy and his mother found dead in Calgary condominium died in a murder-suicide. Autopsies show Yu-Mei Lai, 39, and her son, Kevin Liu, both died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Their bodies were discovered about 9:45 p.m. Thursday in a condominium in the city's northwest. Police have released few details, but confirmed a suicide note was found in the home.

Man kills son in failed murder-suicide bid

FUKUOKA — Police are investigating a failed murder-suicide in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture, that left a young boy dead and his father in hospital. According to police, a 32-year-old man and his 4-year-old son were found lying unconscious in their home by the man’s mother, who visited the residence at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, after she was unable to contact her son, Fuji TV reported. The boy was taken to hospital in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest and was later pronounced dead. Doctors say the man’s life is not in danger. Police have not yet announced the cause of the boy’s death, but they are treating the incident as a failed murder-suicide bid.

Conn. man sentenced for teen killing spree

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 20-year-old Hartford man was sentenced Friday to 55 years in prison for killing two people and shooting two others over a nine-day period last year. Charles Wilson had pleaded guilty earlier to two counts of felony murder and two counts of first-degree assault. The Hartford Court reports that Judge Joan Alexander told him at his sentencing in Hartford Superior Court his "horrific crimes cannot be tolerated in a civilized society." Prosecutors said Wilson, then 18, had showed no remorse for killing two men during May 2011 robberies in which he wasn't threatened. A surveillance video showed Wilson shot Manchester convenience store clerk Aurang Zaib Sahi in the head May 22 as Sahi had his hands raised in the air. On May 30, he fatally shot 74-year-old Andrew Igidi in the chest during a robbery attempt on Albany Avenue. On May 27, Wilson injured two innocent bystanders as he shot at a man, also on Albany Avenue.

Woman found stabbed to death after neighbors report sounds of argument

TOKYO — A woman was found stabbed to death in her apartment in Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward, police said Tuesday. 86-year-old ex-cop found dead in house after killing woman with sword

TOKYO — A former police officer suspected of killing a woman with a sword was found dead in the victim’s house in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward on Wednesday afternoon. TV media showed police outside the house during the standoff at Nozawa 1-chome in Setagaya. Swiss boarding school 'torture' history revealed

There was always this incredible fear, fear, fear, fear," recalled a former student of a Catholic boarding school in the German-speaking central Swiss canton of Lucerne. The former student, whose name was not given, was one of around 50 former boarders at 15 different boarding schools in Lucerne between 1930 and 1970 who in chilling detail testified to their experiences in a report ordered by the canton. "These interviews were very important for the people in question, because finally their testimony was being taken seriously," said Markus Furrer, the lead author of the report and a professor at the PHZ Lucerne University of Teacher Education. "Many boarding school children long felt guilty over the experiences they had. Some managed to move on, others failed and some committed suicide," said Furrer, who along with two colleagues had spent a year and a half delving into the murky past of these establishments.

Some cases of violence and sexual abuse were already known, he told AFP, but "we were not expecting it to be this large-scale." When a child was too noisy or wet the bed, the nuns running the schools used cruel punishments like "pushing small children's heads under water," Furrer said, comparing the practice to "waterboarding", a controversial interrogation technique broadly considered to equate to torture. The report of around 100 pages, seen by AFP, details the abuses, hardships and humiliations suffered by the Swiss boarding school students, many of whom had been taken from their poor families and placed there by authorities. Going without food was commonplace, one of the former boarders recalled. "I cannot remember anyone who wasn't hungry. Basically everyone was hungry," he said. Children who tried to have a sip of water in between meals were also harshly dealt with, according to the report. "If someone bent over a faucet to drink, his head would be pushed down so his face hit the faucet," another former student testified.

Fearless Fla. woman fights back, wounds home invasion suspect with his own gun

When three people invaded Teresa Martin’s Tampa home over the weekend, her adrenaline took over. Now one of them is in the hospital, wounded by his own gun, and the other two are in jail. RIALTO (KTLA) -- A domestic violence call turned deadly Sunday after a man accused of beating two women and shooting neighbors took his own life. Rialto Police received a call late Saturday night of a domestic dispute at a home in the 13000 N. Pampas Avenue. According to Rialto Police Capt. Randy De Anda, a man at the home had beaten his girlfriend and her mother. When the two tried to flee to a neighbor's house, the 50-year-old suspect chased them, armed with a high-caliber handgun. He reportedly opened fire at the group, shooting two men at the home. The suspect ran back home, and by the time officers arrived, had barricaded himself in a room in the second floor. Around 4 a.m. Sunday, SWAT officers eventually moved in and discovered the suspect dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The women were taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The two male victims were also taken in an unknown condition.

LAKELAND VILLAGE (KTLA) -- A 72-year-old man shot and killed an intruder at his Lakeland Village home, authorities said Sunday. Riverside County Police received a call around 5 a.m. Friday of a burglary in progress at a home in the 33100 block of Zellar Street in an unincorporated area of Lake Elsinore. According to a press release, the elderly homeowner told dispatchers that he had shot the man as he was creeping in through a window. The homeowner told the Press-Enterprise that he awoke to a loud noise and found the power had been cut to his home. He yelled at the burglar, and after assuming he left, shot at the window. Deputies arrived several minutes later to find the 51-year-old suspect suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported a local hospital where he later died.

A father-son hunting trip took a fatal turn when a 63-year-old man from Prince Albert, Sask., accidently shot and killed his 36-year-old son in rural Saskatchewan. Woman restrained by dog collar dies in man's apartment

AOMORI — Police on Sunday questioned a 38-year-old man after a woman with whom he shared an apartment in Aomori was found dead with a dog collar around her neck. According to police, the suspect, identified as Takashi Kuwano, confined the 31-year-old woman in the kitchen on Friday morning by locking a dog collar around her neck, Fuji TV reported. She was able to move no further than two meters. When Kuawano, who is a truck driver, returned home 8 1/2 hours later, the woman was lifeless on her knees, so he called 110, police quoted him as saying. Police said the woman had no external injuries, but an autopsy on Saturday revealed she had died from multiple organ failure. Police suspect Kuwano may have been repeatedly abusing her. Kuwano was quoted by police as saying he restrained the woman because he didn’t want her to walk out on him.

CHIBA — The body of a woman wrapped in a duvet has been found in her home in Chiba City, police said Saturday. According to police, the body of 65-year-old Sachiko Ashihara was discovered on Friday morning when district court staff visited her property to evict her, Sankei Shimbun reported. Her body was discovered wrapped in a plastic sheet and a duvet. Police say it had been placed on a terry blanket in the center of a room. Police said that Ashihara’s remains were partially decomposed, but no obvious signs of injury were visible. It is believed that Ashihara shared the apartment with her 38-year-old son, although police say they have not been able to contact the man and that his current whereabouts is unknown, Sankei reported. Marine marksman sheds light on how gunmen from the 'hood unwittingly use a well-known aiming technique

It's an iconic image immortalised in dozens of Hollywood gangster films: the gangster aiming down the side of his pistol before pumping a volley of bullets into his victim. But with most people knowing that the aiming sights are found on the top of a gun barrel, it's also a counter-intuitive way to accurately fire a weapon. So why is it that gangsters are always shown using their guns in this way? According to Jon Davis, a former marksmanship instructor with the U.S. Marine Corp, there is a good reason, at least in theory. As a specialist in pistol marksmanship and a veteran of the war in Iraq, Mr Davis has fired these kinds of weapons thousands of times.

He explains that when aiming a handgun in the conventional, barrel-up manner the rear sites must line up with the front sight in the horizontal and vertical planes to make sure the bullet travels a straight line. This important technique, known as 'building the castle' since the gunman has to line up the three 'turrets' into an even position, ensures that the barrel of the gun is aligned perfectly along the trajectory he wants the bullet to travel. The problem with 'building the castle' each time you want to fire your gun is that it takes time. Time you might not have in a combat situation - or alternatively when you want to quickly execute your victim and make a fast getaway.

Instead, gangsters - albeit unkowingly - use another method to get what's called a 'flash sight picture' by quickly aiming down the side of the gun barrel without perfectly lining it up with the target. The 'flash sight picture' is a way to quickly get an aim that's good enough for combat but without worrying too much about being totally precise with your aim. Marines do it too, Mr Davis says, but they hold their guns the right way up.

In answer to a question on quora.com Mr Davis explains: 'The problem with tilt style shooting is that it is almost impossible to acquire a reliable sight alignment. The alignment in tilt style is achieved by making the weapon flat and aiming down the side. 'In theory this works, but in practice you can't accurately measure movement left or right and you have absolutely no way of knowing if the weapon is tilted down below your field of vision from the back of the weapon. 'This means that you never actually take the same shot twice since you are never actually aiming the same way.' This, Mr Davis adds, shows that there is in fact a rational method behind why gangsters aim their weapon side on. However, it's not a particularly good method - and they probably don't realise that there's method to it at all.

KANAGAWA — Police and mental health specialists are assessing the criminal liability of a woman who has confessed to stabbing to death her two daughters at their home in Hayama, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Wednesday night. HIROSHIMA — Police said Tuesday they have arrested a 28-year-old woman over the death of her 11-year-old daughter at their home in Fuchu, Hiroshima Prefecture. According to police, the suspect, identified as Asato Horiuchi, allegedly beat her daughter Yuma with a golf club on Monday morning at about 11 a.m., Fuji TV reported. While she was driving her daughter over to her parents’ house in the afternoon, Yuma lost consciousness and Horiuchi stopped at a police koban for help. The girl was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

3 men held for murder, confess to making curry from victim’s remains

TOKYO — After more than three years of searching, Tokyo police thought they had finally gotten a lead on the whereabouts of Kazuyuki Kobayashi, a male restaurant owner who suddenly went missing in May 2009, when an investigation led them to three men who were said to be acquainted with Kobayashi before his disappearance. The men, who had been arrested on separate charges of fraud earlier this year, were brought to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department for questioning on Sept 27 and were immediately suspected of murder after it was found that Kobayashi has come to them demanding the repayment of an unspecified amount of money he had lent them earlier.

The case then took an even more gruesome turn when, on Monday, two of the suspects confessed that they had stewed the pulverized remains of Kobayashi in a pot of curry. According to the suspects, after murdering Kobayashi, they dismembered his body and kept in a freezer for roughly one year until, around August of last year, they pulverized his remains with a hammer, grilled them on a barbecue and then cooked them into a batch of curry. Investigators believe that the suspects may have done this in order to cover up the smell of the body. Curry is known for having a strong smell and would surely be potent enough to neutralize the odor of the “ingredients.”
