'Angry birds' strike fear in Swedish golfers

Golfers at the Rya Golf Club in Rydebäck, southern Sweden, have been subjected to a swarm of attacks from angry birds which are both hungry and breeding. “This year, they actually attacked our guests for the first time,” the club’s receptionist, Annika Hermansson, told The Local.

“The crows have always come down looking for people’s food, but they are getting vicious this year.” Hermansson claims that around 10 people have complained of attacks, one of whom compared his ordeal to a horror film. “I was just about to swing when two big crows started attacking and biting me. Two men were killed and a woman and a 6-year-old boy were seriously injured in a head-on collision in Middleborough Wednesday night caused by a wrong-way driver, State Police said. State Police said the driver of a 2011 Ford F150 pickup truck was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 105 when he smashed into a Ford Focus near the interchange with Interstate 495. The driver of the pickup, a 27-year-old Plympton man, was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:30 p.m. crash. Michael Wofford, 33, was high on the drug PCP when he tore around the complex in northwest Oklahoma City on June 20, according to his girlfriend. EDMONTON - The random killing of a 16-year-old girl stabbed in the neck during a break-in at her aunt’s duplex on Monday is a “senseless act of violence,” say seasoned homicide cops. Staff Sgt. Bill Clark of the Edmonton police homicide unit said the girl — who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act — was in the city with her father and spent Sunday night at her aunt’s north side home near 127 Avenue and 125 Street.

Some time around 4:45 a.m. Monday, an intruder broke into the home and slipped into the girl’s room while she slept. She was awakened by the unknown intruder who then stabbed her in the neck before fleeing the scene, said Clark. Four people were in the home at the time, including her sleeping father, who came to her aid once he realized what was happening. He tried to give his daughter first aid and called 911, said Clark, but she later died in hospital.

OTTAWA — An Ottawa priest who previously admitted to gambling problems has been charged after an investigation found more than $240,000 in cheques were misappropriated. Joseph LeClair, 55, was charged with one count each of fraud of $5,000 and theft over $5,000. A complaint was filed by the Ottawa Archdiocese in August in relation to concerns about the financial administration at Blessed Sacrament Parish. Police investigations uncovered more than $240,000 in the form of cheques from the parish were misappropriated. Further, more than $160,000 in cash was missing. The investigation covered a review period from Jan. 2006 to May 2011.

Jail time and Bible study: S.C. woman's odd drunk-driving punishment

A South Carolina woman has received a rather unusual sentence for drunk driving — jail time and a Bible reading. Cassandra Belle Tolley, in addition to spending eight years in jail, has been ordered to read the Old Testament book of Job and write a summary of it for Circuit Court Judge Michael Nettles, according to CBS Charlotte. The 28-year-old received the sentence late last month, which also includes five years of probation and substance-abuse counseling, after she crashed her car while intoxicated, severely injuring two people.

Tolley, who has had a harried past, is apparently grateful for the religious assignment, according to her attorney, Amy Sikora, a York County public defender, The Herald reports. Sikora claims that the 28-year-old was physically abused by a relative when she was a child. A relative allegedly doused Tolley with gasoline and set her on fire on Thanksgiving Day, when she was just 11-years-old. Burn scars can be seen on her face.

According to the police summary of facts, Bonner contacted Ms Morris on New Year's Eve and they arranged to meet for dinner at his house in the quiet Coniston Ave, Ilam on January 3. She drove her blue Honda Civic to Bonner's house about 6.20pm after finishing work. He had set up the sunroom for her to stay the night so she could enjoy a drink. They ate dinner, drank bottles of wine she had brought and smoked cannabis. After dinner, they watched a Dire Straits DVD and when that finished Bonner put on a Corrs DVD for Ms Morris to watch while he washed the dishes in the kitchen. Ms Morris, who worked and socialised at Phoenix Bar and Cafe, was seated in a La-Z-Boy chair when Bonner came back into the room and attacked her from behind.

She received skull and eye socket fractures, a broken nose, broken tooth, extensive facial bruising and two lacerations to the back of her head caused by "a very forceful collision with a rounded-edged item,'' Crown prosecutor Kathy Bell told the court. He strangled Ms Morris with her own leggings, which was the ultimate cause of death, although Ms Bell said the head injuries were life-threatening in their own right. Bonner then dragged his friend's body through the lounge, out the back door and into her car. He dumped the car at Greys Rd, near the airport, with the victim semi-naked and face-up. The vehicle and body were found by a passing jogger three days later.

Woman stabbed at Stockholm youth hostel

"A woman in the room next to me screamed, 'don't kill me'," the good samaritan told the Aftonbladet newspaper. Police received a call about the stabbing at the youth hostel, located near Fridhemsplan on the central Stockholm island of Kungsholmen, around 2.20am on Monday morning. The victim was taken to hospital with more than 20 stab wounds. According to police, the woman may not have survived the attack had a fellow hostel guest who overheard the commotion not decided to intervene.

"The neighbour in the room next door heard the scream, forced open the door, and saved her life," police spokesperson Lars Marklund told the TT news agency. Despite receiving multiple stab wounds, the woman is in stable condition and is expected to survive. Police arrived on the scene shortly after the attack and were able to arrest the man who carried out the attack on suspicion of attempted murder.
