LOS ANGELES, Calif. (KTLA) -- Police found two men dead Saturday afternoon in what officials are calling a murder/suicide in West Los Angeles. Officers responded to an call requesting ambulance assistance about 12:10 a.m. at a home in the 2400 block of Colby Avenue. They arrived to find 80-year-old Alphonse Bernardin Jr. dead inside the home, seated in a chair with two gunshot wounds to the chest, according to an LAPD news release. Police also found a 56-year-old man lying on the ground outside the home's rear door. Paramedics pronounced the man dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed at least 87 people and injured over 600 others in northwestern Iran on Saturday, state TV reported. Toddler and grandfather found dead in bottom of his pool in tragic accidental drowning

The director of food services at the University of Notre Dame and his 18-month-old granddaughter were found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool on Thursday night after apparently drowning. 8 bodies found inside car in northern Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Police found eight decomposing bodies Friday inside a car abandoned by a waterpark in northern Mexico, a day after authorities in a neighboring state located a sports utility vehicle with 14 bodies stuffed inside. The most recent grisly find was in the town of Fresnillo near a warehouse where police had recently seized drugs, Zacatecas state government said in a statement. The badly decomposed bodies were left there several days ago, it said. Zacatecas is a largely rural state that has seen a rise in drug cartel violence in the last two years as the Zetas gang pushes south from its home base along Mexico's border with Texas.

The bodies were discovered after police received an anonymous tip, she said. Hours after the discovery in San Luis Potosi city, a clash between soldiers and alleged gunmen left three assailants dead, the army said in a statement. Two more gunmen were detained, it said.

Gunmen kill 19 Christian worshippers in attack on church in Nigeria

TOKYO — Japan hanged two death-row inmates on Friday, the justice ministry said, bringing the number of executions so far this year to five. One of those was Junya Hattori, 40, who raped and kidnapped a 19-year-old college student in 2002 before burning her to death at a construction site in the central city of Mishima, the ministry said. A 19-year-old mom in Pennsylvania was found guilty of causing shocking injuries to her baby son. The boy suffered nine broken bones between the ages of 15 and 22 months, the Reading Eagle reported. Kiara Mayne Estright was convicted Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. Over a six month period in 2011 while the child lived with his mother in Reading, he suffered a bleeding skull fracture, two fractures to the same leg, a broken collarbone, a broken arm, a broken hand and three fractured ribs. He was alone with his mother when all of the fractures occurred, Assistant District Attorney Ellen R. West said in Berks County Court. He has not suffered any injuries since he moved in with a foster family, she added.

Chinese teenager stabs 8 people to death

The teenager, 17, identified only by his surname Li, barged into the home of his girlfriend armed with a knife following an argument and killed two relatives of the girl. After "conflicts" with his girlfriend, police say Li travelled to her home and killed two of her family members with a knife. As he fled the home in Liaoning province's town of Yongling, he stabbed six more people to death and wounded five in a deadly struggle to escape capture. He was arrested at the scene of the attack, late on Wednesday night, and was taken into custody, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Death sentence for sex slaying upheld

The state Supreme Court upheld the death sentence Monday of a Livermore man who was convicted of breaking into the home of a 59-year-old nurse, sexually assaulting her and stabbing her to death. Richard Tully was an unemployed 27-year-old Marine Corps veteran with a drug habit but no felony criminal record when he broke down the front door of his neighbor Shirley Olsson in July 1986, sexually attacked her and stabbed her 23 times, the court said. A drug arrest in March 1987 led police to take Tully's fingerprints and match them with those on the murder weapon, a knife found in a pond near the death scene, the court said. Tully admitted being at the home of Olsson, a nurse at the Veterans Administration hospital in Livermore, but said another man had attacked her. The court unanimously rejected challenges to Tully's convictions and sentence, including arguments that prosecutors had prejudiced the jury with evidence of the killing's effect on the victim's relatives.

Farmer killed by bull on farm in Builth Wells, Powys

A farmer has been killed by a bull on a farm in Powys, it has emerged. Arthur Thomas, 74, was loading the animal into a trailer when it crushed him in Builth Wells on 19 July. Dyfed-Powys Police said they were called to the farm after reports the man was injured but despite medical help he died shortly afterwards. The force said that firearms officers destroyed the bull for the "protection and safety of the wider public". An inquest has been opened and adjourned.

A Florida man was arrested and charged with murder for allegedly shooting to death a door-to-door salesman seven years after prosecutors say he pulled a gun on a woman who came by to read his electric meter. According to an arrest report, Kenneth Roop, 52, of Cape Coral, shot and killed 30-year-old Nick Rainey, who stopped by his house last Wednesday to offer him frozen steaks and lobster. Rainey, an employee of Blue Ribbon Steak and Seafood, had just knocked on Roop’s door at 1815 SW 30th Terrace when the 52-year-old homeowner pulled into the driveway in his pickup truck, the arrest report cited by Fort Myers News-Press said. As the salesman started walking toward Roop’s truck, the suspect told police he became ‘more than a little nervous’ because he spotted something in the stranger’s hand.

With Rainey drawing closer, Roop pulled out his 9mm Glock from his pocket and fired one shot, hitting the 30-year-old in the shoulder, the alleged gunman told police. Rainey tumbled to the ground and yelled at Roop, ‘You shot me’ in what the 52-year-old described to investigators as an ‘antagonistic’ manner. Although Rainey was lying on the ground wounded, Roop said he was still in fear and thought that the victim was trying to reach for something, so he shot the young man in the back of the head, ‘for effect,’ the arrest report stated. Roop told detectives Rainey should have respected his three ‘No Trespassing’ signs and explained he didn’t warn Rainey before opening fire, telling police, ‘I’m not going to give him the chance to do something to me; I was in fear.’

John Godfrey, who was selling meat with Rainey that day, said his colleague had no idea what was coming. While the 30-year-old man lay face down bleeding from his shoulder wound, Godfrey said his assailant sat in his truck for a few seconds before firing a second shot at his head, ‘execution style.’ He described the 52-year-old suspect as showing ‘no emotion whatsoever’ in that moment.

A long-time St. Louis-area teacher has been charged with rape and statutory sodomy after turning himself in, apparently in the mistaken belief that the statute of limitations had expired, authorities said Tuesday. Donald Ingerson, 67, is now jailed on $300,000 cash bond after being arrested and charged Monday. He doesn't have an attorney. Ingerson called the St Louis County Prosecutors’ office June 4 and met with prosecutors Monday, when he allegedly admitted to sexual contact with two high school girls - one in the 1970s and one in the mid-1990s. St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch said Ingerson worked in five or six districts in the Missouri county from the 1960s through the 1990s. 'This is the first time we've had someone contact our office and say, `I want to talk about what I did,' McCulloch told the AP.
