A Texas teen was accidentally shot dead by her own step-brother on her 13th birthday as he cleaned his AK-47, police said.
Austin McCord, 19, was trying to remove rounds from the deadly assault weapon at their home in Joshua on Tuesday evening when a bullet fired and hit Emilee Bates in the stomach.

Cops were called at 8:11 p.m. Bates was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Worth but died two hours later.
Investigators believe McCord had ejected two dummy rounds above his loaded magazine.
Thinking he'd made the weapon safe, he pulled the trigger to drop the bolt.
But he'd forgotten about the loaded magazine, and ended up firing a bullet at the Loflin Middle School student.
