Man seeking warmth killed in car fire

TORONTO - A 54-year-old Scarborough man died in a car fire early Wednesday morning — an apparently indirect victim of the ice storm. The victim was found by crews responding to a 911 call for a vehicle fire at the rear of 2424 Kingston Rd., just west of Midland Ave., shortly after 2 a.m., the Toronto Fire Service said. “When Firefighters arrived on the scene the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames,” Capt. David Eckerman said. “Once the fire was out they realized there was an occupant inside.” The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released. Those who knew the victim said his apartment was among the 70,000 or so homes in the city that were still without power on Christmas Day. “He was in his truck trying to keep warm because it was so cold where he lived,” said Pauline Soule, an area resident who knew the man. The hydro was knocked out at her home as well and she decided to spend Christmas Eve at a friend’s place rather than shiver in her apartment. So Soule said she could understand why the man would have hopped into his vehicle to warm up. “It’s sad,” she said of the tragedy. “Especially because he was such a nice guy.”
