Hundreds of dead baby birds wash up on Oregon beach after pelican invasion

Hundreds of dead baby birds have washed up on an Oregon beach, victims of what researchers said was a massacre by invading pelicans. About 300 dead young murres - a medium-sized diving species - were found on just a three-mile stretch of Agate Beach in Newport, KATU-TV reported. Oregon State University professor Rob Suryan said there are likely even more dead birds. He explained that a group of brown pelicans landed in a murre colony Monday night as adults were raising their chicks. Many of the adults fled, but most of the babies fell into the water or were eaten by the pelicans and washed ashore. "This looks like the final disruption at that colony, where it's gonna be a near failure this year," he said. It’s also one of the deadliest, according to KATU.
