It is a troubling sign when a child changes his name to that of a serial killer, and even worse when the criminal is a member of the family. That is just what Matthew Meuleman did. In 2007, at 14, he took on the surname of his great- uncle Ivan Milat, who was in prison for life for seven murders. Three years later, the Austral­ian teenager would prove that he was cut of the same monstrous cloth. On Nov. 20, 2010, the younger Milat and another teen, Cohen Klein, 18, lured schoolmate David Auchterlonie, 17, into the Belanglo State Forest in New South Wales. Milat held out the promise of a booze-and-pot celebration for David’s birthday, but a party was the last thing on his mind.

“Someone’s going to die,” he told friends in the days leading up to the deadly trip. As soon as they got into the forest, Milat took a double-bladed battle-ax and knocked David to the ground. “You keep looking at me and I’ll cut your head off,” he shrieked as David begged for his life. Thanks to Klein, who used a cell phone to make an audio recording of the attack, investigators heard every sickening detail — the verbal torment, screams, cries and the sound of an ax tearing into bone and flesh. The victim’s family endured some of it at Milat’s sentencing hearing in May 2012, in which acting Justice Jane Mathews gave him 43 years in prison. Klein got 30 years for his role as an accomplice.

A young girl was killed on Sunday morning as a stray bullet from her father's gun hit her during an argument with her mother. Achauntiara 'Shanti' Lanza, 11, ran upstairs to her mother's second floor room while her mother Kristina Lanza refused to let her boyfriend -- and Shanti's father-- Deandre Kelley, 34, into their Sedamsville, Ohio home. Anita Lanza, Kristina Lanza's mother, says that Kelley left the home but returned just before 2am drunk. Kelley fired several gunshots with a brown revolver into the air, one of which entered the window and shot Lanza, Cincinnati.com reports. She died at Cincinnati Children's Hospital at 3am on Sunday morning. Lanza's three siblings were also in the home, the website says, as well as some of the friends sleeping over. Spike in suicides rate among young veterans 'alarming'

A lightning bolt in Argentina has killed at least three people and injured 22 in a coastal community. The Telam state news agency says the lightning bolt struck Villa Gesell, a town 320 kilometres (200 miles) east of the capital of Buenos Aires. The 16 adults and six children injured were taken to a local hospital. Officials say two women suffered serious injuries. A lifeguard, who witnessed the strike, described the scene: "some people had pain in their feet, some people were in convulsions and some were under cardiac arrest". Washington woman, Viviana Gunn, given 30 years in prison for torturing 13-year-old brother-in-law

One half of a sadistic Washington couple has been sentenced to more than three decades in prison after brutally torturing her teen brother-in-law. Viviana and Brandon Pernell Gunn pleaded guilty to using a hot knife, hammer, staple gun and baseball bat to systematically and repeatedly abuse the child. Viviana Gunn, 34, was sentenced to more than 31 years in prison Monday for the disturbing case of torture in Silverdale, a Seattle suburb.

"It will be good to have you out of the county," Kitsap County Superior Court Judge Anna Laurie told Gunn during sentencing, the Kitsap Sun reported. Her husband, Brandon Pernell Gunn, 27, has also pleaded guilty to torture charges and faces a similar sentence when he appears in court Jan. 17, the Bremerton Patriot reported. The 13-year-old boy moved from Georgia to live with his half-brother and wife in May 2013 — with the hope they would be good role models.

But they quickly turned violent and menacing, lashing the boy with an electric cord during his first month there after the couple accused the boy of stealing. Torture “sessions” grew steadily worse, as the Gunns would bind the boy to a chair with duct tape or hang him from a bar in the garage of the home. Then, the criminal affidavits describe, Viviana Gunn would heat a knife with a lighter before she cut the boy, and later would spray alcohol on the open wounds to make them hurt more.

Brandon reportedly use a construction-grade staple gun on the boy’s palms and pounded his feet with a hammer, the affidavit says. The couple would strip the teen naked and leave him in a portable kennel like a dog, preventing access to food and returning only to give him a little water and a sleeping pill, authorities said.

Once, the guardians secured his hand in a workbench vice and drove a nail through the teen’s palm with a hammer, the affidavit says. During the last session, the couple bound the boy’s hands, feet and mouth with duct tape and beat him with a bat because they found out he’d sneaked out from the cellar and taken some food while everyone was away, the affidavit says. The boy later escaped by chewing through the duct tape and forcing his way out the cellar door.

He stayed in abandoned buildings and lived off whatever he could shoplift for two weeks before cops found him sleeping on a bench in a Bremerton park, authorities said. The cuts, scabs and thick, raised scars on the boy’s arms tipped off cops to the boy’s weeks of horror. He was taken to the hospital, where physicians noted he had numerous infections from open wounds. He also had a piece of metal, possibly from a nail, in his hand, authorities said.

Detectives searched the house shortly after. They discovered blood on the vice and workbench. Blood was found splattered on a bedroom door and the wall where the teen said he was whipped with an electric cord. Detectives also found a broken chair, staple gun, alcohol spray bottle, dog kennel and a purple baseball bat with blood stains — all described by the boy. Woman dies after being slashed by sickle in Saga

SAGA — Police have charged a 43-year-old man with murder after he attacked a 73-year-old woman with a sickle in Imari, Saga Prefecture. The woman died short afterward in hospital. According to police, the suspect, identified as Masayuki Hara, attacked Yoshie Okubo on Thursday while she was working in a field near her home at around 3 p.m. TBS quoted police as saying Okubo was slashed several times. Witnesses called police and Hara was arrested on the spot. Okubo died one hour later in hospital. Hara, who lived about 120 meters from Okubo, has so far refused to give any motive for the attack, police said.

No. of murders in Japan in 2013 drops to postwar low

TOKYO — The number of murders and attempted murders in Japan last year fell to a post-World War II low, police figures showed Friday, dropping under 1,000 for the first time. The National Police Agency recognised 939 unlawful deliberate killings or attempts to kill in 2013, down more than 8% on a year earlier. An AFP tally shows that equates to around 0.74 per 100,000 people in Japan’s 127 million-strong population, making it one of the lowest in the world, according to figures produced by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

In contrast, Venezuela, where a former Miss Venezuela and her British-born partner were shot to death this week, had 79 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2013, according to the country’s non-profit Violence Monitor. The government says the rate is lower. According to a UNODC report, the United States’ 2010 rate of intentional homicide was 4.8 per 100,000; China’s was 1.0. Japan’s most recent police statistics show overall crime dropped more than 4% on-year, with a little over 1.3 million violations of the penal code. Nearly 75% of which were thefts. The country’s relative safety in comparison with other big industrialised nations is something Japanese people are proud of.

Critics object that the very low murder rate is skewed by what they say is a police tendency to categorise an unusual number of deaths as suicide or accident, a tendency they claim is exacerbated by a very low rate of autopsies.

Arthur John Shawcross (June 6, 1945 – November 10, 2008) was an American serial killer, also known as the Genesee River Killer in Rochester, New York. The serpent's curves roughly mirror the twists and turns of the nearby Saint-Nazaire bridge linking the piece to the very modern progress it seems to be speaking on. However, the work is read, the aspect that is without debate is the menace projected by the fearfully undead snake. Given its location on the shore, the Serpent D'Océan can be seen as a strangely living creature rising from the ocean waters or a purposefully preserved skeleton held above the shallow waves depending on the level of the tide upon a given visit. But despite the changing tides, fantasy, art, and horror have rarely been so steadfastly intertwined.

She obtained a restraining order against him Dec. 5 after he was arrested on suspicion of trespassing on her property.

AOMORI — Police said Friday that a 77-year-old man and his 76-year-old wife were found dead at their home in Aomori in what appears to be a murder-suicide. According to police, the bodies of Hiroko Niiyama and her husband were found by their daughter at around 6 p.m. Thursday. NTV quoted police as saying that Hiroko was found lying on her bed, with a cord tightly wound around her neck. Her husband was found in the garage, having apparently hanged himself, police said.
