Brazilian police arrest man suspected of triple murder in Japan

SAO PAULO — Brazilian police on Friday said they have arrested a man suspected of the Dec. 2006 strangulation slayings in Japan of his Brazilian girlfriend and her two sons. The Federal Police agency says that Edilson Donizete Neves is one of Japan’s “most wanted criminals,” but that as a Brazilian citizen he cannot be extradited. He was arrested on Thursday. Police said Neves returned to Brazil one day after the triple murder in Shizuoka to escape the death penalty he could have faced in Japan. Police say Neves could be sentenced to up to 90 years in jail. But under Brazilian law no one can serve more than 30 years in prison.
