Man fatally stabs sister, injures mother day after prison release

NARA — Police said Wednesday they have arrested a man over the murder of his sister and the attempted murder of his mother at their home in Nara a day after being released from prison. According to police, 35-year-old Toshito Hatanaka was arrested three years ago for slashing a police officer with a knife. Fuji TV reported that he was released on Aug 25 and visited his mother’s house on Aug 26 at around 3:30 p.m. Shortly thereafter, Hatanaka contacted police to report that he had slashed his mother and sister with a kitchen knife. Police arrived at the scene to find Hatanaka’s 40-year-old sister Miki Hatanaka had sustained stab wounds to her back and abdomen and his 60-year-old mother had also been stabbed in the abdomen. Police say Hatanaka’s sister died of her injuries in hospital and that his mother remains in critical condition. During police questioning, Hatanaka was quoted by police as saying, “I got angry when my mother said she couldn’t let me stay at her place.”
