PARACHINAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A bomb blast killed 10 people and injured 18 in Pakistan on Friday, government officials said, in an area that the government said it had cleared of Taliban fighters. "Most of the dead and injured were returning from Friday prayers at a mosque," said Mehmood Aslam, the top government official in the area. The blast took place near a shop in Kalaya, the capital of the semi-autonomous Orakzai region in the ethnic Pashtun belt that runs through northwestern mountains along the Afghan border. No group claimed responsibility.

NINE female health workers shot dead in Nigeria as polio revenge attacks spread

Nine female polio vaccinators have been shot dead in two shootings in northern Nigeria. Islamist militant group Boko Haram - a sect which has condemned the use of Western medicine - has been blamed for the attack. In the first attack in Kano the polio vaccinators were shot dead by gunmen who drove up on a motor tricycle, reported the BBC. Thirty minutes later gunmen targeted a clinic outside Kano city as the vaccinators prepared to start work. Previously religious clerics had some of their followers stop receiving the vaccines saying that it would sterilise their children. Boko Haram wants to impose Islamic law, or sharia, on a country of 160 million split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims. The group has carried out a spate of assaults on security forces in the city in recent weeks.

More than two dozen vehicles, including a petroleum tanker, collided and burst into flames on a foggy Georgia interstate on Wednesday morning, killing at least four people and leaving several others hurt. TOCHIGI — Police on Tuesday arrested a 37-year-old woman for allegedly stabbing to death her 14-year-old daughter at their apartment in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture. The administrator for Miyanishin district in Helmand province, Shah Mahmood Shafa, says the family was driving through the district in a Toyota Corolla Saturday night when their car struck a bomb. Double Murder-Suicide Suspected in Oxnard Shootings

OXNARD, Calif. (KTLA) — Three people were killed in separate, but related shootings in Oxnard on Wednesday night, authorities said. Oxnard police received a call of shots fired around 4:30 p.m. at an apartment in the 1200 block of Hull Place. Officers who responded found two women fatally shot, one inside the apartment and the other outside. One woman was in her 40s and the other was her daughter, who was in her 20s, according to police. About 30 minutes later, a second call came in from the 200 block of South Marquita Street, just a couple of miles away. At that location, officers found a man in his 50s dead from a gunshot wound. Giles, 21, was declared a mentally disturbed sex offender at his first murder trial in April, and Brevard Circuit Judge David U. Strawn reaffiermed that ruling Monday. Strawn ordered Giles sent to a state hospital for treatment as a mentally disturbed sex offender. Under state statute, Giles will not begin serving time in prison until he has been declared cured by a state psychiatrists. The Siriraj Medical Museum in Bangkok is fairly well-known amongst world-travelers seeking out the unusual. A unique complex of six different medically themed museums, the Siriraj requires a fairly strong stomach and few hours of your time. Dylan and I visited the complex about a year ago, one of the last stops on a five week trip through South East Asia.

After spending a good hour and a half hopelessly lost in the rabbit-warren of hospital buildings that the museums are nestled in, we finally found the Siriraj. After touring museums of parasites, pathology, thai medicine, and feeling a bit nauseous over the extensive collection of photographs of murder victims in the forensics museum, we were ready to seek out the most historic museum, the Congdon Anatomical Museum.

Violence broke out on Friday (local time) after news of an inspection to confiscate weapons at the Centro Occidental jail, prisons minister Iris Varela said in a statement, without providing a death toll. Local media reports say between 26 and 54 people have been killed and dozens wounded. A prisons ministry source told Reuters that "many" had been killed, including one national guard officer, but declined to offer more details. The source said the ministry would hold a news conference on Saturday with details.

Mutilated animal corpses still appearing on streets of Kure

HIROSHIMA — Police in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, have received a series of reports of animals being dismembered and left in public places. Police say that incidents had been reported in which cats had been killed and dismembered. Police also say there have now been three reported incidents in which pigeons’ heads were removed and their bodies left near sidewalks and other public places to be found by passersby, Fuji TV reported Thursday. Since March of last year, 16 cats have been found killed and dismembered. Local residents were quoted as saying they are frightened and don’t now what to expect next. Police say the locations and timing of the recent incidents involving pigeons are different to those of last year involving cats. As such, they believe the latest incidents may have been committed by a different individual copying the modus operandi of the original perpetrator.

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Officials say suspected fighters from a radical Islamist sect beheaded three people in a northeastern Nigerian city where gunfire has echoed through the street. The violence happened Wednesday in Maiduguri and appeared to be the work of the sect known as Boko Haram. Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said three people had been beheaded in an early morning attack in a Maiduguri neighborhood. Later, witnesses and officials said four dead bodies were found in another neighborhood. Residents say a Boko Haram fighter also shot and killed another person, drawing mortar fire from the military. Boko Haram is waging a bloody sectarian fight against Nigeria's weak central government, which has been unable to stop the violence. Authorities blamed the sect for killing five others Tuesday in the northern city of Kano.

KANSAS CITY, MO. - A 93-year-old man accused of killing his wife thought he had also stabbed himself to death and asked paramedics en route to the hospital "why I am I still awake?" authorities said on Wednesday. Harry Irwin is charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his 95-year-old wife, Grace, in south Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said. A daughter of the couple found Grace Irwin bleeding on a bed and Harry Irwin laying still in a recliner with knife in his hand, according to a probable cause statement filed by detectives in the case. Harry Irwin had apparently slit his wrists and plunged a knife into his chest, detectives said in the statement. Grace Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene. On the way to the hospital, police said Irwin stated: "Yes, I killed her then killed myself. Why am I awake?"

SAITAMA — Police said Wednesday they have arrested a woman for allegedly killing her newborn baby son by throwing him out of a toilet window in an apartment in Honjo, Saitama Prefecture. According to police, Madoka Masuda, 26, Masuda was staying at her 30-year-old boyfriend’s apartment when she gave birth to the child in the toilet on the evening of Jan 19, TBS reported. Immediately following the birth, police say she threw the child out of the window and left it outside to die. Masuda’s boyfriend was quoted by police as saying that he noticed something was amiss due to an unusual odor in the bathroom and looked out of the window. He saw the baby’s body outside and notified the authorities.
