In a recorded interview three days after the murder, Leary told police he hit Mr Harwood with a hammer up to 20 times, until he stopped moving.
The court heard that the next morning the 33-year-old and another man took the body to the other man's farm and tried to feed it to his pigs.
Both men were arrested the following day.
