A teenager and his ‘secret’ girlfriend drowned after he tried to vault a canal lock to impress her, and she tried in vain to save him, an inquest heard today.
Fayz Uddin, 18, and Sara Rylance, 17, were both found floating face down and just meters apart after a friend who was with them during the evening tryst raised the alarm.
The court heard Miss Rylance shouted: ‘I love you’ to her boyfriend as he struggled to keep his head above water in the 20ft-deep lock.
