Heartbreaking crime: Charges filed in deaths of Edgerton, Mo., sisters

Zahnd said Miller last Friday got high on methamphetamine and went to the home where Haarup lived with her two young daughters. Key was temporarily staying at the home, and her daughter was elsewhere. The murder charges contend Miller admitted going to the home just after sunrise with the intention of having sex with Haarup, although the two had no previous sexual relationship. Platte County Sheriff Richard Anderson said Miller told investigators that he had known Haarup for some time and was attracted to her. Authorities declined to elaborate further on their connection. Miller walked into the unlocked home unannounced and found Key sleeping on the couch, the charges state.

Key awakened startled and confronted Miller, the charges allege, and he punched her and then grabbed an object from a table and struck her in the head. The charges contend Miller then smothered her until she stopped moving. After that slaying, according to the probable cause statement in the case, Miller headed to Haarup’s bedroom with a wooden stick in his hand and his mind set on sexual assault. Haarup was asleep on her side facing away from Miller. The charges allege he struck her head with a stick. Haarup sat up and screamed as Miller allegedly struck her again in the head. Miller then suffocated her with a pillow, according to the charges.
