A Nevada baby's first birthday ended in tragedy when he was mauled to death by his 120-pound pet mastiff, the family said.
Baby Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan's family was getting ready to put him to bed at around 10 p.m. on Friday when the boy crawled over to pet their 6-year-old mastiff-Rhodesian ridgeback mix, Onion, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The animal and the baby had been happily playing together all day while Jeremiah opened presents at his grandmother's house in Henderson — but suddenly, the massive hound snapped.
Onion latched his jaws around the boy's head and furiously shook him back and forth, police told the newspaper.
The boy's father, Christopher Shahan, 29, told the Review-Journal he heard the grandmother's panicked screams and raced downstairs to save his son.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
