A local hero thought of as like the loveable actor Walter Matthau was allegedly stabbed to death in his home by a youth he took on fishing trips to keep out of trouble.
Volunteer youth worker Bert Allanson, 71, died on Saturday in a suspected botched robbery at his home in Birkenhead on Wirral.
He left his home shortly before 10pm on Friday to collect some birthday cake from a neighbour’s house but made the fatal mistake of leaving a door unlocked.
Dean Brennan, 20, is alleged to have sneaked in through the unlocked door and during an altercation knifed ‘community spirited’ Bert to death.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
