HR Giger dies at 74

The Swiss artist and designer of Ridley Scott's Alien, H. R. Giger, has died aged 74, a spokesperson at Giger's museum in Gruyere has confirmed. He died in hospital on Monday after he fell down stairs at his Zurich home. Born in 1940, Giger was best known for his 'Xenomorph' alien in Scott's sci-fi horror masterpiece for which he won a visual effects Oscar in 1980. He studied architecture and industrial design in Zurich and was known for creating strange dreamscapes.

A small Canadian town was terrorized Friday by a crazed gunman who is believed to have shot dead a priest inside a church before going on a rampage before he was gunned down by police. John Quadros, 55, of St Paul, Alberta, was killed by Royal Canadian Mounted Police after he is said by police to have likely killed Father Gilbert Dasna and then going on a high speed chase through the center of town that culminated in a crash derby-like shootout, sources said. A man kept his dead mother in a freezer for three years while spending her social security money - and then killed himself as police unraveled the mystery. Authorities are investigating a possible murder-suicide that left a married Texas couple dead and their two children suffering gunshot wounds early Monday morning. Police were called to a home in the 6400 block of Penbrooke Dr. S.E. shortly before 6:30 p.m. where they found one victim, a woman in her 30s, who had died in her neighbour's arms at the front of the house. The neighbour told QMI Agency she heard screaming, followed by "we need an ambulance, she's been hit" and went tearing out of her home because she thought a child had been run over. Afghan officials gave up hope on Saturday of finding any survivors from a landslide in the remote northeast, with the number killed or missing put at between a few hundred and as many as 2,700. Man jumps to death after fatally stabbing father

TOKYO — Police in Tokyo said that a 46-year-old man apparently jumped to his death after fatally stabbing his father at their condominium in Tokyo’s Koto Ward on Sunday morning. According to police, they received a call at about 3 a.m. Sunday from a 73-year-old woman reporting that her husband had been stabbed. TV Asahi reported that police arrived at the 27th-floor apartment of a 47-floor building in Toyosu and found the body of the woman’s 77-year-old husband on his bed. He had been stabbed in the chest. Police said he was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. A bloody knife was found in the kitchen. At around the same time, police found the body of the couple’s 46-year-old son on a roof over the entranceway below. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Daughter arrested for killing 83-year-old mother with kettle

AICHI — Police in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, said Monday they have arrested a 55-year-old woman for fatally beating her 83-year-old mother with a kettle at their home. According to police, the suspect, identified as Nobuko Inagaki, repeatedly beat her mother on the head with a filled metal water kettle in the heat of an argument at around 10 a.m. on Sunday. Inagaki’s mother Yuri was taken to hospital where she died six hours after the attack, police said. Police quoted Inagaki as saying she had become enraged during a dispute and come up behind her mother and struck her violently on the head.
