An Italian man has been crushed to death by a giant crucifix, built to honour the late Pope John Paul II. The 100 foot-high crucifix, which weighed 600 kg, fell on the unlucky victim, Marco Gusmini, during a ceremony in the northern Italian village of Cevo, near Brescia, ahead of the Pope's canonization on Sunday. In a strange twist, it emerged that Gusmini lived on a street named after another Pope — Pope John XXIII — who will also be canonized on Sunday. Gusmini had been taking photos with a group of friends when the crucifix collapsed, reported the Telegraph.

Woman killed on a snowmobile speeding ahead of her boyfriend's after she chose to ride with their friend because he was a 'safer' driver

A 20-year-old woman killed while sharing a snowmobile driven by her allegedly intoxicated friend thought she had chosen the safer driver. Victoria Henderson died on Wednesday night after flying off the back of a snowmobile operated by Nicholas Krenz and hitting an ice shack on frozen Bone Lake, Wisconsin. Krenz, 21, allegedly veered to avoid the shack, throwing the young woman off. Henderson's boyfriend Thomas Mergens was trailing the pair on a separate snowmobile when the accident happened about 10pm. Ironically, Henderson, from the western Wisconsin town of Luck, had refused to ride with her boyfriend because she felt he drove too fast.

Woman hearse driver dies taking body to funeral

In an odd and ironic turn of events Beverly Hills police say a hearse driver who was found dead with a body in the vehicle died while taking the casket to a funeral. The body was discovered inside the hearse at round 3 p.m. where it was parked on the side of the road near the Beverly Hills Hotel on Crescent Drive, near to Sunset Boulevard. A passerby reported the body of a woman slumped behind the steering wheel and upon investigation police have found no evidence of foul play and suspect the death was due to natural causes.

Doctors had to bring him back to life three times. Now he's preaching the gospel of safe driving.

Man sought in boy's killing is impaled, dies

DELANO, Calif. -- A man wanted in the beating death of a 2-year-old Kern County boy has been killed in a gruesome accident, authorities said Monday. Delano police made the revelation after the mother of Juan Felix, Noemi Mendoza, 23, was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading no contest to willful cruelty to a child, The Bakersfield Californian reported. Juan died after being taken to a hospital in January 2011 by the mother's live-in boyfriend, Cesar Osuna. An autopsy performed on the boy showed that he died from blunt force trauma. He suffered multiple rib fractures, tearing of abdominal membranes and a skull fracture, according to Delano police reports filed in court. Mendoza was charged for leaving her child in the custody of someone considered dangerous, said Kern County prosecutor Arthur Norris. There were indications the boy had been abused on other occasions, Norris said. After Juan's death, Osuna fled to Mexico, where he worked in construction. While on the job, he touched a live wire, fell and was impaled on a fence, said Delano police Cmdr. Lynn Venables.
