Father-of-one loses three limbs and half his face to flesh eating bacteria which started as a common cold just FOUR months ago

A young father-of-one who came down with a common cold in November has since lost three limbs and skin from his face after it developed into a horrific flesh-eating bug. Alex Lewis, 34, had to have both of his legs and his left arm amputated after his feet, fingertips, arms, lips, nose and part of his ears turned black. His major organs shut down and the keen golfer, who has a three-year-old boy called Sam, spent a week in a coma as the deadly bacteria wreaked havoc through his body.

Woman with stomach pain is found to have a 40-year-old FETUS inside her

A Colombian woman suffering from stomach pain was found to have a 40-year-old fetus inside her. The 82-year-old, from Bogota, had what is known as 'lithopedion', or stone baby, when the unborn child develops outside the womb. The woman was originally thought to be suffering from a stomach bug, NTD TV reports.

Religion could disappear by 2041 because people will have replaced God with possessions, claims leading psychologist

Religious people in many developed countries will be a minority by 2041, according to one Irish biopsychologist. A study into the beliefs of people living in 137 countries, which forms the basis for a new book, found atheism increases in more developed places as people become increasingly materially rich. The book also debunks the popular belief that religious groups will dominate atheistic ones because they collectively have more children.

Three women die within month of receiving organs from same donor

A colonial inquiry into the deaths of Karen Wilkinson, 44, Carmelina Sirianni, 63, and Gurpal Sandhu, 64, has prompted calls to improve communication between hospitals and medical staff. The three women received the organs from the same donor, 57-year-old Jovo Vranjesevic, but all died within six days of each other – and within a month of the transplants. Mr Vranjesevic died from a stroke 12 days after returning to Melbourne following a three-month stay with relatives in Serbia in 2006 The inquest heard he contracted lymphocytic choriomeningitis, an infectious virus spread by house mice, during his stay in Serbia, though he did not die from it. However, the coroner, Audrey Jamieson, found the three women developed complications within days of their transplants in 2007 and all died of the virus.

Doctors save man's life by using neat alcohol to give him a HEART ATTACK

Doctors have saved a patient's life by killing off part of his heart with neat alcohol. Medics used the rare treatment on Ronald Aldom to induce a controlled heart attack, after they realised they could not safely perform standard procedures on him. Cardiologist Dr Tom Johnson said his 77-year-old patient would have died without the procedure.

Cannibalism a fact of life for lobsters

LITTLETON, N.H. - Researchers studying Maine’s lobster population, booming in recent years amid warming waters and disappearing predators, have detected something never before seen in the wild: lobster cannibalism. It has long been known that lobsters will attack and eat each other if confined together in a small space - hence the banding of claws on lobsters in supermarket tanks. That aggressive behavior had not been thought to occur in the wild, but with the increasing density of the crustaceans in the Gulf of Maine it seems big lobsters are feasting on little lobsters once the sun goes down. “We’ve got the lobsters feeding back on themselves just because they’re so abundant,” said Richard Wahle, a marine sciences professor at the University of Maine, who is supervising the research. “It’s never been observed just out in the open like this,” he said.

This Must Be Heaven

By Sam Harris

Once upon a time, a neurosurgeon named Eben Alexander contracted a bad case of bacterial meningitis and fell into a coma. While immobile in his hospital bed, he experienced visions of such intense beauty that they changed everything—not just for him, but for all of us, and for science as a whole. According to Newsweek, Alexander’s experience proves that consciousness is independent of the brain, that death is an illusion, and that an eternity of perfect splendor awaits us beyond the grave—complete with the usual angels, clouds, and departed relatives, but also butterflies and beautiful girls in peasant dress. Our current understanding of the mind “now lies broken at our feet”—for, as the doctor writes, “What happened to me destroyed it, and I intend to spend the rest of my life investigating the true nature of consciousness and making the fact that we are more, much more, than our physical brains as clear as I can, both to my fellow scientists and to people at large.”

Well, I intend to spend the rest of the morning sparing him the effort. Whether you read it online or hold the physical object in your hands, this issue of Newsweek is best viewed as an archaeological artifact that is certain to embarrass us in the eyes of future generations. Its existence surely says more about our time than the editors at the magazine meant to say—for the cover alone reveals the abasement and desperation of our journalism, the intellectual bankruptcy and resultant tenacity of faith-based religion, and our ubiquitous confusion about the nature of scientific authority. The article is the modern equivalent of a 14th-century woodcut depicting the work of alchemists, inquisitors, Crusaders, and fortune-tellers. I hope our descendants understand that at least some of us were blushing.

Dolphins 'resort to rape'

Dolphins appear to have a darker side, according to scientists who suggest they can resort to 'rape' to assert authority. Researchers found the marine mammals lead complex social lives, living in an "open society" where regular homosexual and bisexual relationships are found. The conclusions from the international team of scientists came after they spent the past six years studying the behaviour of 120 bluenose dolphins in Shark Bay, Western Australia. In one of the most extensive studies of its kind, male bottlenose dolphins were also found to organise gang-like alliances, in which they guard females against other groups.

'Contract killer' ants provoke others to attack

German researchers have discovered that male members of a species of tropical ant act as "contract" killers. Scientists found that male ants daub young rivals with a chemical scent which induces a murderous rage in gangs of workers.

Bacteria, viruses and parasites 'cause 1.5million cancer deaths each year'

Bacteria, viruses and parasites cause around two million cases of cancer in the world each year, experts believe.

Of the 7.5 million global deaths from cancer that occurred in 2008, an estimated 1.5 million may have been due to potentially preventable or treatable infections.

Scientists carried out a statistical analysis of cancer incidence to calculate that around 16 per cent of all cancers diagnosed in 2008 were infection-related.

The four muscles that give the game away for lying murderers

Four muscles in the upper face can show us when someone is lying, according to researchers.

Scientists from the University of British Columbia in the U.S. have identified the muscles a trained eye can use to separate genuine expressions of emotion from deceptive ones.

It is here that signs of our true feelings are 'leaked' at moments of great emotional intensity or pressure.

A mute button for people? 'Speech jamming gun' that stops people talking by freezing the brain

Cannot wait to get my hands on one of these...

-The gadget fires a speaker's words back to them causing them to stutter and then stop talking

-'Delayed Auditory Feedback' works because the brain does not like hearing the echo of the human voice

-Research has found it works best during a speech, making it ideal for shutting up unpopular politicians

Science creates computer that can decode your thoughts and put them into words

Scientists believe they have found a way to read our minds, using a computer program that can decode brain activity in our brains and put it into words.

They say it could offer a lifeline to those whose speech has been affected by stroke or degenerative disease, but many will be concerned about the implications of a technique that can eavesdrop on thoughts and reproduce them.

'Flesh-eating' bug case causes concern

A patient in Palmerston North is the latest in New Zealand to be treated for a rare and potentially lethal "flesh-eating" bug.

MidCentral District Health Board this morning confirmed a patient had been admitted to Palmerston North Hospital with necrotising fasciitis, a disease which eats away at deep skin tissue, in the last three months.
