NYPD slow to make the connection in Park Plaza Hotel slayings that claimed lives of eight women

No doubt New York’s Finest would just as soon forget that the Park Plaza Hotel ever existed. Eight women who lived alone there turned up dead in their rooms over a 16-month stretch, and the NYPD failed to make a connection. The first to die was Theresa Jordan, 39. Her decomposed body was found April 10, 1973, at the hotel, at 50 W. 77th St., opposite the American Museum of Natural History. Today, the rebranded building is called Parc 77, and closet-sized apartments go for three grand a month. But 40 years ago, it was a welfare flop where rooms rented for 40 bucks a month to down-and-outers. The coroner was summoned to the Park Plaza again 16 weeks after Jordan died. Kate Lewinsohn, 65, a retired stenographer, was found suffocated and raped in Room 221. Bodies really began piling up at the hotel in the spring of 1974.

Student facing death sentence in China for hanging two prostitutes, shipping their bodies to his home and having sex with the corpses

A 23-year-old university student in China will be executed after hanging two prostitutes and having sex with their corpses. The student, whose surname is Lee, was studying design at Jilin University in Changchun and told police that he had been failing a lot of classes and called the prostitutes to help relieve the pressure. He also told detectives that he used to have fantasies about having sex with dead bodies and decided one morning that he could no longer resist carrying it out. On March 6 this year he hired a 20-year-old prostitute called Cai through the internet, according to iFeng.com.

Lee then hanged her and had her body shipped back to his house in Changping , where he had sex with the corpse. It was then dismembered and the parts buried in Lee’s garden. On March 23 he carried out the same macabre act on the body of another prostitute that he’d hanged and shipped home. A forensic psychiatrist determined that Lee wasn’t insane and was criminally responsible for the crimes. The Second Intermediate People's Court found him guilty of intentional homicide and sentenced him to death. It also ordered him to pay 80,000 yuan (£8,000) in compensation to the victims’ families.

Turk charged with murder, rape of Japanese tourist

ISTANBUL — A Turkish court has charged a man with murder and rape over an attack on two Japanese women that killed one and badly wounded another, the Hurriyet newspaper said Thursday. The court in the central city of Nevsehir charged Fatih Uyar, 24, with stabbing tourist Mai Kurihara to death and sexually assaulting her dead body. He was also charged with sexual assault and attempted murder in the case of her travel companion, Hoshie Teramatsu, according to a statement from the prosecutor cited by Hurriyet. The two Japanese women, both 22 years old, were attacked Monday while hiking in the Zemi valley in the popular tourist region of Cappadocia.

Bernard Eugene Giles, who already has confessed to one slaying, has pleaded guilty of killing four other young women and was sentenced to four consecutive life terms at hard labor. Giles, 21, was declared a mentally disturbed sex offender at his first murder trial in April, and Brevard Circuit Judge David U. Strawn reaffiermed that ruling Monday. Strawn ordered Giles sent to a state hospital for treatment as a mentally disturbed sex offender. Under state statute, Giles will not begin serving time in prison until he has been declared cured by a state psychiatrists. Giles has confessed to killing five Titusville-area women, whose partly clad and descomposed bodies were found over a two-month period late last year in orange groves near here. Giles confessed Monday to killing Paula Hamric, 22, a Titusville waitress; Carolyn Bennett, 17, of Mims; Sharon Wimer, 14, and Kristi Melton, 15, both of Titusville. At his first murder trial, Giles confessed to killing Nancy Gerry, 18, of Titusville, and faces a life sentence in the slaying. He also faces sentences for armed robbery of a Cocoa woman and for attempted rape.

Egyptian women fight proposed 'farewell sex' laws

Women in Egypt are fighting proposed laws that would permit men to have sex with their wives up to six hours after death.

On Monday, Egypt's National Council for Women sent a letter to Egyptian People's Assembly Speaker Dr. Saad al-Katatni, asking parliament not to approve the controversial laws, the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram reported.

The council argued the new marriage rules, lowering the legal age to 14, and the "farewell sex" legislation are similar to traditions that have prevented women from working or being educated.

The idea that marriage remains valid, even after death, came from Moroccan cleric Zamzami Abdul Bari, who spoke about it in May 2011. He also said women have the same right to have sex with their dead husbands.

Accused lived with decomposing corpse, court told

An Auckland computer programmer murdered his Thai girlfriend then lived with her decomposing body in the lounge for nearly a month, a court has been told.

Gordon Hieatt, 49, is on trial in the High Court at Auckland for the murder of sex-worker Nuttidar Vaikaew, 48, in April 2009.

Crown prosecutor Rachael Reed said Hieatt told police he had choked her after an argument got out of control.

Reed said Hieatt killed Vaikaew on April 16 but continued living at her Western Springs, Auckland, flat for over three weeks, going about life as normal - taking trips to Wellington, visiting sex workers and going to family gatherings.

The police officers who responded to a call from Vaikaew's landlord on May 12 were greeted by a smell "indescribable and putrid".

Dead flies and maggots littered the floors.

Vaikaew's body was on a double bed in a curtained-off corner of the lounge, covered in blankets with a dressing gown over the head.

A fan was blowing over the bed to try and alleviate the stench, Reed said.

An examination of Hieatt's computer showed he had been on instant chat site MSM with another girlfriend in Thailand during the time his partner of two years lay rotting next to him.

The chat logs showed him saying Vaikaew "had gone and she was never coming back".

He later said Vaikaew had "made him crazy and he had killed her on Friday".

In other conversations he said he had read jokes all day to cheer himself up.

The trail before a jury and Justice Priestley is scheduled for three weeks.

Man told police he had sexual contact with body

UPDATE: Thurston County Sheriff's deputies have booked Bernard K. Howell, 26, of Tenino into jail on one count of murder in the second degree and one count of theft in the first degree. According to court papers, Howell told police he found the body and had sexual contact with the dead woman, who was in her 50s.

The theft charge was added because sheriff's believe the suspect took the victim's vehicle after the crime.

Investigation has revealed that the victim may have been in the area of Highway 507 and Mull Road, possibly on the Chehalis Western Trail when she was attacked, however, the exact location of her murder has not been found at this time. A vehicle located near that location belongs to a woman from Yelm who has not been seen since yesterday morning. Positive identification is pending. an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.

Police don't believe the suspect knew the victim based on the investigation so far, but are still trying to determine the relationship.

TENINO - A 26-year-old man was pulled over at about 8:15 Sunday night in the area of Parkside Elementary School with a dead female in the passenger seat of his Nissan pickup, according to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.

The dead female, described only as an adult woman, had not been positively identified as of early Monday morning, Thurston County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Mealy said Monday. Police are investigating the woman's death as a homicide, according to Mealy.

The woman appeared to have suffered "intentionally-inflicted wounds," Mealy said. He would not elaborate.

Mealy said the 26-year-old was placed under arrest on suspicion of second-degree murder and first-degree theft. Mealy would not release the 26-year-old's name early Monday morning. The 26-year-old had not been booked into the Thurston County Jail as of about 1:20 a.m. Monday, Mealy said.

Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock confirmed early Monday morning that the coroner's office was on scene concerning the incident involving the dead woman.

The 26-year-old driver of the pickup told police that he had found the body and "saved the family the funeral expenses," according to Mealy. The woman was found wrapped in a sleeping bag and other material, Mealy said.

A sheriff's deputy on patrol was flagged down in the area of Central Street and Bogner Road in Tenino by a man at around 8:15 Sunday evening, Mealy said. The man told the deputy he had information about a dead body in a truck, Mealy said.

The witness then told the sheriff's deputy that the truck was driving by at that moment. The witness pointed out the vehicle and the deputy followed him and pulled him over with the help of a Tenino police officer, Mealy said.

The 26-year-old driver "took a while to stop," but when pulled over and did not try to resist, Mealy said.

Mealy said sheriff's deputies have obtained a search warrant for the 26-year-old's pickup, and for a second vehicle, a RAV4 on state Route 507 near Mull Street. Sheriff's deputies also have obtained a search warrant for a local residence, Mealy said.

Man held for violating corpses

A 41-year-old mortuary assistant has been arrested for alleged violation of corpses, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the man was arrested on Sunday after another worker allegedly caught him with his pants down in the mortuary.

"We called a doctor on Monday to examine the corpses and the doctor confirms they were violated," he said.

He said there were three bodies and tests conducted revealed he had allegedly violated two.

He was due to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Man charged of necrophilia arrested

MUMBAI: The city police have arrested a 24-year-old man from suburban Chembur, accused of necrophilia.

The accused Nagesh Gholap an alleged necrophiliac was arrested on Wednesday for murdering and raping a 14-year-old girl.

According to the RCF police, the girl went missing on January 4 when she had stepped out of her house to buy medicines from a nearby shop, from where she was lured by Nagesh, who took her to his house.

Nagesh on Friday admitted to have murdered the girl first and then raping her, a senior police official said.

"During his interrogation, the accused has said that he first drowned the girl in a water tub and then assaulted her with a rod so that she does not scream for help. After that he raped her," the official said.

Nagesh then smashed the victim's face and stuffed her body into a sack and left it in an empty flat in the same building.

The body was recovered by police on January 5, after neighbours complained of a stench emanating from the flat.

Police say it was the gunny bag in which the victim's body was stuffed that led them to Nagesh. "We found several vegetable pieces stuck to the gunny sack and investigations revealed that the flat was owned by Nagesh's mother, who used to store vegetables there," the official said.

Gholap has been booked for murder and rape and is in police custody till January 22.

Morgue worker admits to sex with more bodies

Kenneth Douglas added to his ghoulish count Monday, admitting he had sex with two more bodies while he worked at the Hamilton County morgue.

Douglas, 56, of Westwood, pleaded guilty to two counts of gross abuse of a corpse before Visiting Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Richard Niehaus. He could be imprisoned for a maximum of three years at his Dec. 10 sentencing.

Douglas was employed for 16 years, from 1976-1992, as a night attendant at the morgue. He told authorities previously that while there, he invited women in and partied with them with drugs and alcohol. He also admitted to having sex with bodies being stored while awaiting autopsies.

He is currently serving a three-year sentence for having sex with another corpse – that of Karen Range, a 19-year-old murder victim who was nearly beheaded in 1982 and had been in the morgue cooler for hours.

Douglas said nothing Monday except to give respectful, short answers to routine questions from the judge.

The corpses he admitted Monday to abusing were those of two homicide victims awaiting autopsies:

• Charlene Edwards, 23, also known as Charlene Apling, was strangled to death. Douglas said he had sex with her body Oct. 1, 1991, on the day she died. She was six months pregnant when she was killed by Mark Chambers, in his Avondale home. Chambers originally was charged with murder but accepted a plea bargain and was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sent to prison for 10-25 years. He was paroled in 2000.

• Angel Hicks, 24, was pushed from a third-story window and died from blunt trauma. Douglas said he had sex with that body Dec. 8, 1991. Tyrone Williams was charged with murder in the case. He was acquitted months later at trial. There was a question whether Hicks was killed or committed suicide.

Douglas pleaded guilty without a plea deal. Assistant Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier said his office would offer no deals to Douglas.

After Douglas pleaded guilty in 2008 to having sex with Range’s corpse officials conducted an extensive investigation comparing Douglas’ DNA to that of other bodies in the morgue during the time Douglas worked there.

Initially, officials feared there could be dozens of other victims, based on what Douglas told them. They were able to indict him on two additional charges.

“He told us he was out of control,” Prosecutor Joe Deters said in March after Douglas was indicted on the two charges he pleaded guilty to Monday.

Douglas was first caught when he violated his probation on a previous conviction on drug and alcohol charges, and his DNA was taken by officials and placed in a database. The database showed Douglas’ DNA matched that of the semen left in Range’s body.

That was good news for David Steffen, who spent 26 years on Ohio’s death row for Range’s murder but who insisted he never raped her. Now, Steffen’s attorneys are using Douglas’ acts to try to get Steffen off of death row.
