In a further blow to shattered families, the South Korean government has also been forced to admit that it in some cases bodies of the victims were 'wrongly transferred.' Bodies will now be identified through DNA and finger-print testing to ensure the correct victims are sent home for burial.

The bungle heightened public outrage even further, as families wait to confirm the loss of up to 300 mainly young lives in the disaster. About 20 relatives were reported to have forced their way into the office of Choi Sang-hwan, the Deputy Director of the Korea Coastguard, before dragging him outside. The South Korean government has today conceded that some of the recovered bodies have been misidentified and announced changes to prevent such mistakes in the future. Meanwhile, an opposition politician has also claimed he has documents from the Korean Register of Shipping which show the ferry was carrying more than three-and-a-half times more cargo than regulators allowed.

Three gang members who tortured a jewellery designer in an attempt to gain access to his safe before setting him on fire and leaving him to die inside his burning home have been jailed for a total of 90 years. Harvey Mumford, Zac Cowdrey and Simon Penton went to 'extraordinary lengths' to target Michael Griffiths, 59, tracking him down on the internet before conducting reconnaissance on his house in Fernhurst, Surrey. They first attempted to con their way into his property by pretending to be police officers wearing hi-vis jackets and after that failed they broke into his home while he was out and lay in wait for him to return.

When Mr Griffiths, who was described as a 'wonderful, fun-loving person', arrived he was stunned and 'hog-tied' with his hands and ankles bound together before being brutally tortured in the hope he'd give up the key to his safe, thought to contain diamonds worth £40,000. The gang then poured petrol onto him and onto the surrounding ground and set him on fire before callously leaving him to burn to death. Cowdrey, 24, and Mumford, 23, both of Staines, Surrey, were found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 32 years. Penton, 27, of Sunbury, Surrey, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 26 years in Prison. After passing sentence, Judge Michael Lawson said: 'There was a complete plan to cause some harm to Mr Griffiths. This plan was exceeded by Cowdrey and Mumford. 'Mr Griffiths was overpowered to get to the valuable property you thought was in his safe.

Man lost at sea while performing California beach baptism

A man swept out to sea by seven-foot waves during an oceanside baptismal ceremony in California on Sunday remained missing a day later as hopes faded he would be found alive, officials said on Monday. U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Adam Stanton said three men were initially washed away by the surf while performing the religious ceremony, held on the shore of the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve in the small Santa Barbara County city of Guadalupe. Two of the men were able swim back to shore without injuries, but the third man, whom authorities have not named, was still lost on Monday afternoon, according to a statement by the Santa Barbara Fire Department. Man, 66, found guilty of strangling his 30-year-old girlfriend to death and living with her body for more than two weeks

A California man has been found guilty of murdering his 30-year-old girlfriend and living with her body in his apartment for two weeks. A jury convicted Santa Cruz resident John Bruce Clauer, 66, following a three-week trial after only four hours of deliberation. Clauer now faces up to 25 years in prison for the murder of Heather Stearns, 30. 'We were extremely pleased that they (the jury) were not out very long, and we were extremely pleased with the verdict,' prosecutor Jeff Rosell told the Santa Cruz Sentinel outside court. Clauer reportedly sighed and was reprimanded for outbursts during the trial, but faced the verdict stoically. Jury foreman Conrado Montes, 71, told the Sentinal that testimony from Clauer's neighbors and ex-girlfriends during the trial 'was like seeing one of those really bad horror movies.'

Clauer's neighbors and ex-girlfriends testified during the trial, as well as police, the Santa Cruz County coroner and others. 'He [Clauer] was slowly building up this hatred [for Stearns]. He was like a time bomb. It all came to a halt one night.' The jury heard how Stearns was strangled and stomped to death in Clauer's apartment near the San Lorenzo Rivermouth in April 2011. The Sentinal reports that Stearns was an alcoholic whose dependency had taken over her life. She lived with Clauer because he provided her with a place to stay and booze. According to neighbors, the couple argued regularly and the sounds of Clauer's vicious beating of Stearns was nothing unusual, so they turned up the television and did not notify police. It wasn't until a strong odor emanating from Clauer's apartment two weeks later led the neighbors to investigate. The obtained keys from the building manager and entered the apartment. They discovered Stearns' corpse, wrapped in blankets on a bed.

The woman was saved when her dog lunged at Suddons who then fled but was stopped when a cyclist caught up with him and returned him to the scene. Prosecutor David Outterside said that Suddons carefully planned the attack and hoped his rape kit would help him avoid the mistakes he made which led to his arrest for the 2004 offences. He said the gloves and condom were to ensure Suddons deposited no DNA and the balaclava was to hide his identity. 'What was on his mind was rape. This time he was prepared and was absolutely determined not to be caught. He thought he could get clean away with it but he was caught red-handed.'
