A death row inmate spent forty minutes writhing in agony before dying of a heart attack following a new cocktail of drugs administered in a lethal injection on Tuesday night. Oklahoma prison officials halted Clayton Lockett's execution after the experimental drug left the man writhing and clenching his teeth on the gurney. The 38-year-old, who was found guilty of shooting a woman and watching his friends bury her alive, was declared unconscious ten minutes after the first of the state's new three-drug lethal injection combination was administered.

Three minutes later, though, he began breathing heavily, writhing, clenching his teeth and straining to lift his head off the pillow. It later emerged his vein had ruptured. The blinds were eventually lowered to prevent those in the viewing gallery from watching what was happening in the death chamber, and the state's top prison official eventually called a halt to the proceedings. Lockett died of a heart attack a short time later, the Department of Corrections said. Local media present said Mr Lockett sat up and said 'something’s wrong' 13 minutes into the procedure. 'It was a horrible thing to witness. This was totally botched,' said Lockett's attorney, David Autry.

To ease the tension, he made funny faces and mouthed words to relatives, who included his two daughters, sitting in the observation room. As the lethal drug was administered, he took a few deep breaths before becoming still, and his daughters cried as he closed his eyes. He was pronounced dead at 12:11 a.m.

Two ivory poachers have been killed after brutally murdering a rare Indian rhinoceros at a wildlife sanctuary in the northeastern state of Assam. Fred Phelps, the pastor who led a small Kansas church's vitriolic "God Hates Fags" anti-gay campaign across the United States, has died, the church said on Thursday. Phelps, whose Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, won a 2011 freedom-of-speech U.S. Supreme Court decision related to their anti-gay picketing, died on Wednesday in a Kansas hospice at the age of 84. "People die - that is the way of all flesh," a blog post on the church's website said. Phelps founded the church in the 1950s. In his later years, Phelps, known as "Gramps" to his family, turned over much of the church's day-to-day operations to his offspring.

An Iranian man should be sentenced to having his eyes gouged out after pouring acid over a young girl's face leaving her blind, an Iranian court has ruled. Opposition group, The National Council of Resistance of Iran, said the man could have his right ear and nose cut off as punishment for attacking the girl with acid, causing her to lose her eyesight and right ear. The national council said Iran's high court defended cutting off the body parts of those found guilty of a crime, and removing eyes, as part of the country's judicial system. Juan Carlos Chavez, 46, was pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m. Wednesday after a lethal injection at Florida State Prison, according to Gov. Rick Scott’s office. Chavez made no final statement in the death chamber, though prison officials said he had submitted something in writing. He moved his feet frequently after the injection began at 8:02 p.m. but two minutes later stopped moving. Chavez abducted Jimmy Ryce at gunpoint after the boy got off a school bus on Sept. 11, 1995, in rural Miami-Dade County. Testimony showed Chavez raped the boy, shot him when he tried to escape, then dismembered his body and hid the parts in concrete-covered planters.

A Chinese man has been executed for keeping six women in a dungeon as sex slaves and killing two of them, state media reported. The official Xinhua news agency said that Li Hao had been convicted of murder, rape, illegal detention, organized prostitution and making pornography for profit in 2012. The 35-year-old, from Henan province, was sentenced to death in March 2012 for keeping the women in his grim tiny cellar and for his role in the murder of two of them The local government clerk had built a dungeon in his basement where he forced the women to work as prostitutes. Three of the women he held were given leniency for their role in the two murders. One received three years and the two others were put on probation. Eventually, one of the women managed to escape and she went to the police.
