The victim of an attempted Bronx carjacking went berserk Friday, chasing down the thieves and shooting them dead, cops said. The 30-year-old man was driving a Mercedes-Benz SUV when he was approached by Jermaine Johnson and Kaiison Lewis outside the Dyer Avenue Deli Grocery in Wakefield about 4:40 a.m., police said. Johnson and Lewis, who both lived in Mount Vernon, N.Y., tried to steal the SUV at gunpoint, investigators believe. But when their mark fought back, they ran to Johnson’s car, which was parked nearby at Rombouts Ave. and Light St. That’s when their target pulled his own gun and riddled Johnson’s green Acura TL with bullets, cops said.

Iran hangs 16 prisoners after guards killed near Pakistan border

Iran's regime carried out a series of revenge executions on Saturday, hanging 16 prisoners in retaliation for a rebel attack which killed 14 border guards. The bloodshed in Sistan-Baluchestan province showed how south-eastern Iran is still affected by a long-running insurgency. Sunnis from the Baluch ethnic minority inhabit this remote desert region, near the border with Pakistan. They are viewed with deep suspicion by Iran’s Shia Persian rulers. A Baluch armed group styling itself “Jundallah” has fought the government for decades. On Friday, gunmen killed 14 Iranian border guards and wounded another five during what IRNA, the official news agency, called “armed clashes in the region of Saravan”. The authorities took revenge on Saturday by executing 16 inmates of Zahedan prison, all of whom were described as “rebels”. Briar told Canada’s National Post that he saw one boy put another boy in a headlock. Then Briar, who attends Sir John A. Macdonald Junior High School, heard the flick of a knife. He wasn’t trying to play a hero when he pushed the knife-wielding bully away from his classmate. But school officials accused him of exactly that. His mother, Leah O’Donnell, said that the school’s vice-principal told her that the school doesn’t “condone heroics” and a teacher should always be called in such situations. Briar was reprimanded for helping out his fellow student.

The bully was suspended and the police were called. Some bullying experts say that the school should be commending—not punishing—Briar for his actions. “By reprimanding Briar, the administration is demonstrating to bullies that students who intervene will be reprimanded,” Richard Brenner, author of 101 Tips for Targets of Workplace Bullies, told TakePart. “This can only encourage bullies.” Brenner said the school appears to have its own problems since it was possible for “a bully to engage a target with a teacher in the room.” He added, “This administration is sorely in need of some education about bullying policy.”

Teen turns knife on sex attacker

OTTAWA -- A 19-year-old woman somehow wrested a knife away from a man who broke into her room Thursday in a brutal sex attack that has stunned residents of a west Ottawa apartment. Tenant Sarah Kitney, 25, got the shock of her life when she answered a banging on her Elmira St. apartment at about 10 a.m. "There was a girl there, she was dripping blood. I noticed she was completely nude, except for a leather jacket," said Kitney, who gave the terrified woman clothing and towels. "She told me someone broke in, attacked her and had a knife." The woman also told Kitney she had been forced to perform sex acts. Kitney, whose unit floor was splattered with blood droplets, brought the woman inside and called police. Officers arrested a man a short time later. Neighbours said he was nabbed in a nearby unit.

"They were screaming and yelling at him to put his hands up," Kitney said. "They broke in, dragged him out. He was just in boxers and covered in blood." Sources said the 56-year-old man was stabbed in the groin, thigh and chest. According to neighbours, the man is a tenant of the building. The victim is believed to be part of a group of students who recently moved in for the start of the school year. Sources said the woman was asleep inside her locked unit when a man broke in. She suffered what witnesses describe as defensive wounds to her hands but somehow managed to get the knife away from her attacker, whom she did not know.

Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla says Julio Saquil was drunk when he entered an elementary school in the northern province of Alta Verapaz on Wednesday and slit the throats of two children with a machete. Bonilla says a mob then set the 35-year-old man on fire in the school's patio and he burned to death. Lynch mobs are not uncommon in areas of Guatemala where police are scarce. The Central American country's human rights agency says 234 attempted lynchings took place in 2011 and at least 40 people were killed.
