Priyanka Pal, 24, was rushed to the labour room of the government-run Sultanpur Hospital in Uttar Pradesh state late last Wednesday where she gave birth to a baby boy. But the baby was born with the incredibly rare condition ectopia cordis, which left his heart protruding from his chest, and now needs expensive emergency surgery to prevent him from dying within days.

BERLIN - The corpse of a 66-year-old German woman who died more than six months ago was found in her apartment, in front of a television set that was still on, the Frankfurter Neue Presse newspaper reported on Tuesday. The woman, in the town of Oberursel near Frankfurt, died of natural causes in a nightgown while watching TV. There was a program guide from September nearby, the newspaper said, describing the body as "partially mummified".

A woman's body has been found in two pieces on two separate floors of a hotel car park in Australia. Police were called to the Bayview On The Park Hotel in Melbourne after a cleaner found the lower half of the woman's body in the ground-floor car park at about 5am this morning. The woman's upper body was then discovered on the first-floor car park. 'When I saw it I just couldn't say anything,' the Queens Rd manager Mathew D'Rozario told The Age. 'I am still shaking and most of the staff are shaken up. 'I have never seen anything like that ... when you see this picture you just think "Oh my god".' Mr D'Rozario said the woman appeared to be aged between 25 and 30 years and was of 'Asian appearance'. Police were called to the hotel at around 6:30am and cordoned off the area to investigate. A Victoria Police spokesperson said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman's death.

A retired gas fitter dying from cancer strangled his wife and bludgeoned his daughter with a hammer after reacting badly to cancer treatment, a court heard. Peter Redfern, 70, had lived an exemplary and quiet family life with his wife Jean, 67, and Sarah, 33, at their bungalow home in Wath upon Dearne, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire. But after he was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer he was put on chemotherapy with a combination of drugs including corticosteroids which can lead to 'drug-induced adverse psychiatric events'. His barrister Mark George QC told Sheffield Crown Court: 'He was a man who would never have acted in the way he did had it not been for the reaction of the taking of these powerful drugs.'

Redfern admitted the manslaughter of his wife on the grounds of diminished responsibility and the murder of his daughter on July 22 last year. After killing his wife in the bedroom he lay in wait for his daughter as she came in from work and bludgeoned her to death with a hammer in the kitchen so she could not see her mother’s body. Redfern wept in the dock and held his head down in shame as the facts of the tragedy unfolded. Graham Reeds QC, prosecuting, said Redfern had been diagnosed with incurable cancer and it was recognised that using corticosteroids in a small number of cases could lead to 'drug-induced adverse psychiatric events' of which this was one. Medical experts had concluded that the pensioner fell into the one per cent of the population who would suffer adversely from such treatment and it was likely to have been reponsible for his behaviour on the day.

According to police, the woman, identified as Minayo Abo, walked into the Omiya police station at around 8 p.m. on Sunday. Fuji TV quoted a police spokesman as saying Abo was a resident of Okubo in Shinjuku Ward in Tokyo and was unemployed. Abo was quoted by police as saying the baby died at childbirth one week earlier and that she was alone when she gave birth. No external wounds were apparent on the baby’s body, which still had the umbilical cord attached, police said.
