Oklahoma prison officials halted Clayton Lockett's execution after the experimental drug left the man writhing and clenching his teeth on the gurney. The 38-year-old, who was found guilty of shooting a woman and watching his friends bury her alive, was declared unconscious ten minutes after the first of the state's new three-drug lethal injection combination was administered.

Three minutes later, though, he began breathing heavily, writhing, clenching his teeth and straining to lift his head off the pillow. It later emerged his vein had ruptured. The blinds were eventually lowered to prevent those in the viewing gallery from watching what was happening in the death chamber, and the state's top prison official eventually called a halt to the proceedings. Lockett died of a heart attack a short time later, the Department of Corrections said. Local media present said Mr Lockett sat up and said 'something’s wrong' 13 minutes into the procedure. 'It was a horrible thing to witness. This was totally botched,' said Lockett's attorney, David Autry.

Michael Gilligan had been racing his friend's car through poorly-lit country lanes when he ploughed into the women leaving a bridge competition. Christine Coates, 75, and best friend Barbara Lea, 79, were sent flying 17 metres backwards after colliding with the Vauxhall Astra on their way home and killed instantly.

Gilligan initially refused to accept he had been behind the wheel of his friend's car at the time of the fatal crash. But the court heard he pressured car owner Chelsea Latham, 18, into giving him the keys when they met at a McDonald's restaurant earlier that night. Speaking at the trial, Miss Latham, 18, who was sat in the passenger seat, recalled screaming 'you're going to kill us all,' as she begged Gilligan to slow down. Today he was sentenced to six years in prison, banned from driving for seven years and ordered to take an extended driving re-test. The pair had been seen racing friends in two other vehicles through Millewich and Sandbach, Cheshire, half an hour before the tragic incident on the A533 at 10.45pm on June 18 last year. The next thing Miss Latham remembered was lying in the wreckage of her car.

His lawyers even tried in vain to have the special immigration court, scheduled to be held in Bradford in April, take place in secret to protect Restivo. The killer has a wife living in Bournemouth, more than 200 miles from his high-security jail at Full Sutton, near York.

Despite subjecting the man to 'inhuman' torture, she was spared jail after admitting false imprisonment at Manchester Crown Court. Judge Richard Mansell QC, gave her an 18-month, suspended for two years. He concluded she had been under the influence of Hogan, after an ‘abusive’ relationship during her teens, and was in fear of Doyle. The court heard that the victim, now 42, was so traumatised he did not speak about the ordeal for four years. It was only when he went to counselling after a suicide attempt that he revealed the details of his horrifying experience and the group was arrested. On the night of the attack, the victim, who says he has by flashbacks and ‘can still taste bleach’, was found wandering in the city centre in a ‘stupor’ with severe facial injuries.

Yowell tried to delay his execution, the 14th this year in the nation's most active death penalty state, by joining a lawsuit with two other condemned prisoners that challenged Texas prison officials' recent purchase of a new supply of pentobarbital for his scheduled lethal injection. The punishment was delayed briefly until the U.S. Supreme Court, in a brief ruling, rejected the appeal.

The prisoners argued use of the sedative could cause unconstitutional pain and suffering because the drug, replacing a similar inventory that expired at the end of September, was made by a compounding pharmacy not subjected to strict federal scrutiny. (???)
