Teen tries to shoot squirrel, shoots himself

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS – A 17-year-old boy accidentally shot himself while doing some late-night hunting early Tuesday, according to a Walton County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The boy told deputies he was hunting squirrels in his yard on Eagle Way with a .22 caliber gun, the release said. While trying to shoot a squir-rel, the bullet he fired ricocheted off a metal chair and hit him in the right knee.

He called his father, who came from Fort Walton Beach and drove him to Twin Cities Hospital in Niceville, the release said. The boy’s wound was not life threatening, and he appeared in “good spirits” at the emergency room.
