A killer who tried to dispose of the severed head of his murder victim in a burning pizza oven has been arrested by Italian police.

Gunshop owner Alberto Arrighi, 40, shot Giacomo Brambilla, 39, twice in the back of his head in an argument over an unpaid £100,000 debt.

Brambilla had gone to the shop looking for his money but a furious row erupted with Arrighi, who snapped and killed him.

He then cut off his victim's head and took it to his brother-in-law's pizzeria on the outskirts of Como where he asked him to burn it in the oven.

Then he drove more than 100 miles to an isolated viaduct and threw Brambilla's torso over the side into a river before returning to his shop in the centre of Como to clean up the blood.

Father-of-two Arrighi thought he had got away with the brutal murder but Brambilla's worried girlfriend Elena Puricelli turned up at the shop knowing they had an appointment and grew suspicious because of the strong smell of bleach.

She called police who arrived at the scene within minutes and when they noticed blood stains on the floor of the shop, Arrighi collapsed and confessed to the killing.

Brambilla's badly burnt head was recovered from the oven of Emanuele La Russa's pizzeria - which had been open the night before serving customers but has since been closed as part of the investigation and who has also been arrested.

Today Como police chief Massimo Mazza said the attempt to burn the head had been made after the pizzeria had closed for the evening and added: 'It was a question of money and he has confessed completely. The case is closed.'
