SAN DIEGO - A U.S. Marine faces a felony animal cruelty charge for allegedly hurling a kitten into a patio wall at a friend's Midtown home, leaving its owner saddled with thousands of dollars in veterinary bills, the San Diego Humane Society announced today.
Fernando Pacheco, 27, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon, said Candice Eley, a spokeswoman for the animal welfare agency.
During a June 11 visit to the home of the kitten's owner, Pacheco allegedly threw the 4-month-old feline about 15 feet after it scratched or nipped him, according to Eley.
The cat, named Cullen, required emergency care for a broken leg, as well as head trauma and bloody eyes and nose. The animal has fully recovered, but his owner had to pay about $5,000 in veterinary bills due to the injuries.
The animal hospital that treated Cullen reported the alleged attack to the Humane Society, which investigated and forwarded its findings to the District Attorney's Office, Eley said.

"He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
"Being is substance and life; life manifests by movement; movement is perpetuated by equilibrium; equilibrium is therefore the law of immortality.
"The doctrine of equality!... But there exists no more poisonous poison: for it seems to be preached by justice itself, while it is the end of justice.... "Equality for equals, inequality for unequals" that would be the true voice of justice: and, what follows from it, "Never make equal what is unequal."
